Gavignano is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Lazio region with 1922 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

geography

Gavignano is located 60 km southeast of Rome in the northern part of the Monti Lepini , on a hill above the Sacco valley. The municipality borders on Paliano , Anagni , Montelanico and Segni . The district of Rossilli belongs to the municipality.

Gavignano is 8 km from the Anagni exit of the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway from Rome to Naples .

The nearest train station, Anangni-Fiuggi, on the Rome-Cassino-Naples railway line, is 5 km from the town center.

history

In the municipality, near the Via Latina , there were several country villas in Roman times. In the Middle Ages, the place was built from the year 1000. Gavignano is attested to around 1161 as Castrum Gavinani in a document of Pope Alexander III. As a fiefdom it belonged to the Conti , Counts of Segni. In 1495 Gavignano was destroyed by the troops of King Charles VIII and rebuilt under Cardinal Francesco Conti in the first decades of the 16th century, but destroyed again in 1557 during the Italian campaign of the Duke of Alba . In 1597, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini granted Gavignano self-government. Until 1816 the place belonged to the Pamphilj and Aldobrandini families .

The community lives from agriculture (grain, olive and viticulture), there is a mineral water factory (Fonte Gabinia) and craft businesses.

Claudio Sinibaldi (list of citizens) was elected mayor in June 2009. He replaced Carlo Tiberi, who was no longer running.

Culture and sights

The place has a medieval city center , from which the larger buildings Palazzo Baiocchi , Palazzo Traietto and the Castello protrude. The city gates are Porta Romana in the north and Porta Napolitana in the south.

  • In the center of the village is the Castello Baronale (also called Palazzo Aldobrandini or Corte ). The medieval building, birthplace of Lotario Conti, later Pope Innocent III. , was destroyed in 1495. Under Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini, the Castello got its present form at the end of the 16th century.
  • Palazzo Traietto - The building was built by the Lords of Anagni in the early 17th century. It was decorated with frescoes by Federico Zuccari .
  • In the district of Rossilli there are remains of a Roman villa with mosaics. This was probably destroyed by the vandals around 455 . A Benedictine abbey was built at the same place in the Middle Ages between the 8th and 9th centuries , which was first mentioned in a bull by Pope Lucius III in 1182 . is attested. In the 12th century the monastery passed to the Basilians . The three-aisled monastery church, which was restored at the beginning of the 17th century, has been preserved.
  • Fonte Meo - a well known in Roman times.
  • Gavignano has several churches, the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta , the Chiesa di San Rocco , dedicated to the patron saint of the place, and the Chiesa del Calvario .

  • Festa di Sant'Antonio - Festival with traditional horse racing in the first week of July
  • Agosto Gavignanese - Festival in August with a cultural program, Sagra dei maccaruni alla gavignanese (local pasta specialty), on August 14th procession in honor of the patron saint San Rocco
  • Processione della Madonna delle Grazie - festival and procession, 2. – 3. October
