Cervara di Roma is an Italian commune in the metropolitan city of Rome in the Lazio region with 450 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
Cervara is located 68 km northeast of Rome , 78 km southwest of L'Aquila and 13 km north of Subiaco . It is located in the Monti Simbruini Regional Park, above the Aniene Valley . Cervara is at 1053 m above sea level. M. the highest village in the metropolitan city of Rome. In its self-promotion it describes itself as lying “three meters above the sky”. The place is grouped with steep lanes, which are not accessible by cars, around a castle ruin on the top of a mountain cone. Visitors have to drive to a parking lot below Cervaras and climb the entrance to the village via a long staircase. The place offers numerous panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
Cervara is a member of the Comunità Montana Valle dell'Aniene .
The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).

The nearest motorway exit is Mandela on the A24 , Autostrada dei Parchi from Rome to Teramo , 25 km away. The nearest train station is in Roviano on the Rome – Avezzano line , 17 km away.
history
Cervara was mentioned for the first time in 883. Between 1115 and 1121 the monks of the monastery of Santa Scolastica near Subiaco built a castle here as part of a line of defense against the Saracens . In 1508 the castle was renovated as the residence of Abbot Pompeo Colonna . The village developed around the castle. When the monasteries in Subiaco were ousted from power in the 18th century, the castle fell into disrepair.
In 1991, Airone magazine voted Cervara the “Villaggio ideal d'Italia”, the ideal Italian village.
Culture
In 1986, at the suggestion of Vincenzo Bianchi, art historian from Florence , the “Scalinata degli Artisti”, the artist's staircase, was brought into being. Since then, numerous artists have created sculptures and mosaics along the stairs to the site and in its alleys.

The number of inhabitants has been decreasing continuously for about 100 years due to migration to the big cities.

coat of arms
On a blue sign a deer in natural colors over three green mountains. It is a talking coat of arms , as the name "Cervara" is derived from the deer (Italian = Cervi) that were common in the area.
Personalities in Cervara
Numerous artists stayed in Cervara for a while to be inspired by the wild nature, including the painters Eduard Bäumer and Oskar Kokoschka .
In 1831, Samuel FB Morse , inventor of the Morse code, spent a summer in Cervara.
