geography

San Vito Romano is located on a ridge of the Monti Prenestini. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Monti Sabini e Tiburtini .

history

For the year 1085 a castrum Sancti Viti appears in the Registrum Sublacense, which Abbot John of Subiaco acquired. Around 1200 the place came into the possession of the Colonna of Genazzano, who followed the Paliano line. Marcantonio II Colonna, third Duke of Paliano and commander of the papal troops in the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571, sold San Vito in 1563 to pay off debts. The local rulers were briefly followed by the Massimo, who were replaced in 1575 by the Theodoli from Forlì in Romagna, who paid 20,000 Fiorini for it. They bought most of their land in the vicinity. Theodolo Theodoli, became the first Marchese of San Vito, Pisoniano and Sambuci in 1592. The Theodoli belong with some other families of the Rome-based nobility to the so-called Marchesi del Baldacchino, who have a higher rank than their titular colleagues and are equal to dukes and princes. That is why they are allowed to have a throne with a canopy in their main seat in the representation hall, on which only the Pope may sit during any visits. It is doubtful whether the future Pope of Colonna Martin V was born here in 1365. The place has been called San Vito Romano since 1872.
