history
Presumably the place is identical to the ancient Vitellia mentioned in Livy , which the Aequer conquered. Defenses made of Cyclops masonry still come from this time . From the Latin name Civitas Vitellia , the name Civitella San Sisto , after the local saint, developed in the Middle Ages . In 967, Emperor Otto I confirmed Civitella as the property of Subiaco Abbey . The place was therefore usually referred to as Civitella di Subiaco but also after the neighboring town of Civitella di Olevano . In 1880 the community changed the name to Bellegra to avoid confusion with communities of the same name. In the 19th century, like Olevano, the place became a destination for romantic painters like Ludwig Richter and Friedrich Ludwig von Maydell .
