Type : Antipod parakeet
Scientific name
Cyanoramphus hochstetteri
( Reischek , 1889)

The antipodal parakeet ( Cyanoramphus hochstetteri ) is a species from the genus of the parakeet.

The animals have a body length of about 30 centimeters. The color is more yellowish with red to orange-red areas, especially on the head. Males are on average larger than females, the wing length of the male is about 146 millimeters, the tail length 143 mm and the weight 125 grams. Females have a wing length of 133 millimeters, a joint length of 130 mm and a weight of about 95 grams.

Its distribution area includes the Antipode Islands belonging to New Zealand , where it lives both on the coast and inland and, like the monochrome parakeet ( Cyanoramphus unicolor ), is endemic. Because of the remote location of the islands, little is known about him.

The diet is mainly composed of parts of plants, mostly grass (almost 50% flowers, just over 30% leaves, rarely berries and seeds), very rarely bird carcasses or invertebrates are eaten.

The breeding season is in January and February.

For a long time, the antipodal parakeet was classified as a subspecies of the parakeet ( Cyanoramphus novaezelandiae ). According to molecular genetic studies, however, it is an independent species. The Malherbe Parakeet ( Cyanoramphus malherbi ) is closely related .
