With 74 inhabitants per km², the municipality was again in the upper third of the municipalities in the district in 2013. The municipality extends over an average height of 600 to 700 meters, with the highest point of the municipality on the eastern slope of the Hansberg at around 840 meters. The lowest point is around 520 meters in the southern municipal area. In 2001, 27.2 percent of the municipal area was forested, 66.7 percent of the area was used for agriculture. In comparison with the federal state of Upper Austria, St. Veit in the Mühlkreis is significantly less forested than the regional average (Upper Austria: 38.3 percent) and there is significantly more agricultural land (Upper Austria: 49.3 percent). The proportion of other uses (construction areas, gardens, bodies of water and other) is 6.2 percent, well below the Upper Austrian average of 13.8 percent. Neighboring communities are Helfenberg in the north, St. Johann am Wimberg in the west, Niederwaldkirchen in the south-west, Herzogsdorf in the south and south-east and Oberneukirchen in the east (both districts of Urfahr-Umgebung ).

Geology and soils

The landscape of the municipality is part of the Bohemian Massif, which goes back to a very old mountain range that was created by the Variscan mountain formation in the Paleozoic ( Carboniferous ). After the strong erosion of the former high mountains, the crystalline basement was abolished by several 100 meters during the Alpidic mountain formation in the Tertiary , causing fractures and faults. Subsequently, sediments were deposited in the Tertiary and Quaternary periods , which filled the hollow forms of the relief and solid rock (predominantly granite and gneiss) only stood on the heights or flanks of incised valleys. What remained was a hull landscape with a flat, wavy relief and gentle slope and hilltop shapes. In addition to the Hansberg in the west, whose eastern slope lies in the municipality, the western slope of the Schallenberg in the north of the municipality also extends over 800 meters above sea level.

The starting material for soil formation are igneous rocks such as granites (Mauthausener and Weinsberger granite), dike rocks (pegmatites, aplites, etc.) and shell rocks (pearl gneiss, basic mixed gneisses, slate gneisses). The soils are generally light, poor in base and acidic. Agricultural areas usually have medium-sized, moderately dry or deep lime-free soils that are well supplied with water and consist of rocky brown soils made of fine-grained silicate rock (Mauthausen granite, pearl gneiss) or of coarse-grained silicate rock (Weinsberg granite or porphyry gneiss). The sandy-loamy rock-brown soils are only partially interspersed with individual larger stones. Pseudo-gleyed loose sediment brown soils and relict pseudogleye can also be found on the leveled areas. Furthermore, there are in wells and trenches through groundwater and slope water influenced gleyed unconsolidated sediment brown earth and Gleye . In addition, there are lime-free gley soils in the valley area of the streams.

Landscape and vegetation

The municipality of St. Veit can be divided into four landscape areas. In the extreme north is the wooded southern slope of the Schallenberg, whereby there is a closed forest area with predominantly spruce monocultures with a deciduous forest edge. Settlements are only available as islands. Just like the extreme north, the area of the Kleiner Rodltal that adjoins it in the south is also part of the “Southern Bohemian Forest Foothills”. The Rodltal extends from the south of the Schallenberg along the eastern border of the municipality to the south. The area has a slightly hilly structure and altitudes between 560 and 710 meters. The area has a small proportion of forest with predominantly coniferous forests; intensive grassland management with a focus on mowing dominates agriculture. The moist and wet extensive grassland is limited to a few remaining areas. In the center of the municipal area is the settlement-dominated St. Veiter hill country, which also belongs to the southern Bohemian Forest foothills. The sub-area has a strong relief and ranges from 560 to 840 meters above sea level. Characteristic for the area are the large forest areas, which can be found especially on the more steep slopes. Here, too, it is mainly coniferous forests, while intensive grassland farming with isolated arable farming predominates in agriculture. The settlement structure is characterized by the largely closed settlement core of the main town St. Veit. In the south of the municipality there is an intensively used meadow and arable land belonging to the Central Mühlviertel highlands, which extends between 520 and 690 meters above sea level. There are only smaller coniferous forests here, while grassland that is intensively used in agriculture dominates with isolated agriculture.

Waters

The most important body of water in the municipality is the Kleine Rodl , which rises in the north of the municipality on Schallenberg and forms almost the entire eastern border as well as parts of the southern border of the municipality of St. Veit. The Kleine Rodl drains its catchment area towards the south, taking in some less important streams on its way. The Sauladbach rises in the neighboring municipality of St. Johann am Wimberg and in parts forms the western border of the municipality before it flows into the Kleine Rodl. The running waters in the area of the municipality of St. Veit are hardly influenced or regulated by river engineering and run in the forest or with mostly continuous woodland.

The municipal coat of arms was determined by the municipal council on December 5, 1969, as were the municipal colors. The award of the municipal coat of arms and the approval of the municipal colors determined by the municipal council finally took place by resolution of the Upper Austrian provincial government on April 20, 1970. The community colors are blue and white. The dog in the municipal coat of arms is reminiscent of a memorial stone on the former Schlossbräuhaus that Siegmund Hager had his dog Delfin put in place in 1612. The dog was already used as a community stamp in the community of St. Veit before 1938, while the gold star in the blue base of the coat of arms stands for the coat of arms of the Steger and their successor, the Hager von Allentsteig, who owned the St. Veit moated castle until 1758.
