St. Ulrich im Mühlkreis (also Sankt Ulrich im Mühlkreis ) is a municipality in Upper Austria in the Rohrbach district in the upper Mühlviertel with 644 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Rohrbach .

geography

Ortisei in the Mühlkreis lies at an altitude of 622 m in the upper Mühlviertel. The extension is 6 km from north to south and 4.8 km from west to east. The total area is 15.3 km². 22.2% of the area is forested, 73.9% of the area is used for agriculture. Hop cultivation is of particular importance for Ortisei in the Mühlkreis, which is also reflected in the fact that in mid-August 2005 the "Mühlviertel Hop Land", a hop adventure world, was created.

history

Originally under the suzerainty of the Passau bishops , the place was the ancestral seat of the regionally important family of the Schallenbergs . It was first mentioned in a document in 1186. In 1427 this castle - a moated castle - was destroyed by the Hussites, whereupon the Schallenbergers built a new castle next to the ruins, today's Hoftaverne. It was in their possession until 1660. Apart from the remains of the former castle chapel, no traces of the castle have survived.

During the Napoleonic Wars the place was repeatedly u. a. occupied by Bavaria . Since 1814, the place finally belongs to Upper Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . In 1945 Upper Austria was restored.

Originally, the community was part of the Neufelden judicial district from 1850 , but after its dissolution it was added to the Rohrbach judicial district on January 1, 2003.

Since January 1, 2012, the municipality has the new, uniform postcode "4116", street names have been introduced in the village of St. Ulrich and part of Bairach.

In the 2015 election, Alfred Allerstorfer was confirmed as mayor by the ÖVP.

Population development

In 1991 the community had 564 inhabitants according to the census. Since both the birth balance and the migration balance were positive, the population rose to 602 by 2001 and to 673 by 2011.

• Village chapel: Today's village chapel in Ortisei was built on the remains of the former castle chapel. Like the castle, this was built in the 12th century and also destroyed in 1427. In 1482 it was repaired again. The church was profaned in 1786 under Joseph II . In 1870 the nave of the church was demolished. Since then, the choir has formed the existing village chapel.
