St. Peter am Wimberg (also Sankt Peter am Wimberg ) is a market town in Upper Austria in the Rohrbach district in the upper Mühlviertel with 1746 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). The community is located in the judicial district of Rohrbach .
geography
Sankt Peter am Wimberg is 668 m above sea level in the upper Mühlviertel. The extension is 6 km from north to south and 7.7 km from west to east. The total area is 23.4 km². 27.8% of the area is forested, 65.8% of the area is used for agriculture.

Official description of the municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1972: Two red, diagonally crossed keys with turned away beards and handles in three-pass shape above a green three-mountain in gold. The community colors are red-yellow-green.
The crossed keys symbolize as a sign of St. Peter the patronage of the parish church, which gave the parish its name. The Dreiberg characterizes the location of the municipality on the Wimberg.
history
Originally under the suzerainty of the Passau bishops , the place was probably in the 11th century. founded. In 1108/09 it is part of a donation from Eppo von Windberg to St. Florian Monastery . In 1208, the naming as oppidum forense already suggests market law; It is secured from the end of the 16th century as the Aigen of St. Florian Monastery. But since the peasant war began in St. Peter in 1595 after the expulsion of the Catholic priest, this market right was later lost again; it was not until 2000 that the market was again surveyed.
Fires devastated the place in 1682 and 1884. During the Napoleonic Wars he was repeatedly u. a. occupied by Bavaria . Since 1814, the place finally belongs to Upper Austria.
At the end of the 19th century, the pastor of St. Peter, Wilhelm Pailler , and the cave explorer Lambert Karner visited a cave with chambers and vertical passages 3 km northwest of St. Peter, but could not undertake any further research as the cave was up to the height of the Niche was filled with water.
After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.
Originally, the community was part of the Neufelden judicial district from 1850 , but after its dissolution it was added to the Rohrbach judicial district on January 1, 2003.
politics
Mayor is Engelbert Pichler from the ÖVP (election 2015). The ÖVP also has 13 seats in the municipal council. The social democratic party SPÖ holds 5, and the free party FPÖ holds a seat on the local council.
Population development
In 1981 the community had 1,583 inhabitants according to the census. Despite the negative migration balance (–84 and –3), the number of inhabitants increased to 1,607 by 1991 and to 1,763 by 2001, as the birth balance was very positive (+108 and +159). From 2001 to 2011, emigration was greater, so that the population fell to 1,743.
