Wilhelm Pailler Can. reg. (* March 23, 1838 in Linz ; † March 17, 1895 in St. Peter am Wimberg ) was an Austrian theologian and folklorist.

Life

Wilhelm Pailler entered the Augustinian Canons of St. Florian as a novice after graduating from high school in 1858 and was ordained a priest in 1863 . From 1867 to 1868 Pailler studied at the University of Innsbruck a . a. with Ignaz Vinzenz Zingerle German studies , church history and canon law . From 1868 he was a teacher for canon law and church history at the in-house theological training institute of the St. Florian monastery. He had a friendship with the painter and writer Eduard Ille , which is documented by a lively correspondence. From 1878 Pailler was parish vicar in Goldwörth , from 1886 in St. Peter am Wimberg, where he died in 1895.

Pailler began writing during his novitiate and in 1862 wrote a pilgrim book about St. Florian . He translated Jesuit dramas from the Baroque period and other theater texts from Latin, French and Italian. He has also written plays for groups of children and young people as well as Christian amateur play groups. In these he often inserted popular song texts, which he had his Florian brother Bernhard Deubler set to music.

As a researcher and collector, Pailler preferred to deal with nativity scenes , Christmas games , Christmas carols and the customs associated with them. The result of this activity was the collection of Christmas carols and nativity scenes from Upper Austria and Tyrol , published in two volumes in 1881 and 1883 , which "has since been one of the indispensable reference works of the song inventory for the Christmas festival group". However, his collecting activity mainly concentrated on the texts, while only a few (38 and 31) melodies were included in the appendix to his work. In 2000, Arnold Blöchl therefore began to publish an extensive collection of associated melodies from the parallel transmission of the song texts for the Austrian Folk Song Works; of the work calculated on four parts, two parts have been published so far (2014).
