The Cathedral of Anagni ( Italian Cattedrale di Anagni ) is the episcopal church of the Anagni-Alatri diocese . The church in Anagni is dedicated to the Annunciation and has the rank of minor basilica .

history

The construction of the cathedral in Anagni took place in the years 1072 to 1104 by the bishop Pietro da Salerno with the support of the Eastern Roman emperor Michael VII Ducas. The hill had already been used religiously in Roman times. The transept was built around 1200. Pope Alexander IV consecrated the large hall crypt in 1255. Since Anagni served as the summer residence of the popes for a long time in the 13th century, important historical events took place here, such as the "pactum anagninum" (negotiations between the papacy and the empire) and the election of the pope in 1243 , as well as the canonization of St. Bernard of Clairvaux and St. Clare of Assisi . The excommunications of the antipope Viktor IV and of Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa (March 24, 1160), Friedrich II and Manfred were also imposed here. After the assassination attempt by Anagni in 1303 on Pope Bonifatius VIII, who was born in Anagni, the papal residence was relocated to Avignon in 1309.

architecture

The cathedral was built in the Romanesque style, the interior presents itself in Lombard Gothic after the restoration of Bishop Pandolfo in 1250, when the wooden trusses of the central nave and the transept were replaced by Gothic arches . The raw wall of the facade is decorated with a few reliefs and has three gates on the east side. In front of it the 30 meter high campanile with five bells rises. The three-nave church ends with three apses. The valuable mosaic floor, which was executed by the Cosmats in 1231 , is characteristic. In the main apse there are three works by Vassalletto from 1263: the stand for the Easter candle, the cathedra and the ciborium . The medieval frescoes were largely lost here. The paintings in the three apses are modern.

The crypt under the choir, on the other hand, is still extensively decorated with frescoes on over 540 square meters, the mosaic floor also comes from the cosmats. The Oratory of St. Thomas Becket is located next to the crypt in an ancient mithraium , of which the sacrificial altar is still preserved and which was later converted into a Christian oratory.
