Siemens-Schuckert DI

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Siemens-Schuckert DI was a combat single-seater of the German air force in the First World War .

development

After the inferiority of the Fokker monoplane to allied fighter planes became more and more evident in 1916, captured French Nieuport 11 fighter planes were made available to the German aircraft companies in order to make new constructions based on these prey planes . The Siemens-Schuckert works largely stuck to the French model and built the DI as an almost lifelike copy of the Nieuport, but the extended propeller required a raised chassis and the tail spur was also modified to a rounded horn. The DI received the new 110 HP Siemens-Halske Sh.I rotary engine ; The only difference between this machine and its original was a modified engine hood and a hemispherical propeller cover.

150 were ordered, but delivery problems with the engine delayed completion. Therefore, the original order quantity was canceled and only 22 and 73 DI were produced in the two plants in Berlin and Nuremberg .

As an experiment, two prototypes of a Siemens-Schuckert D.Ia with a span of 16.20 m and a D.Ib with an enlarged span of 19.20 m and both with a more powerful engine (130 hp) were completed, but not put into series production. Further developments led to the successful D.III via various D.II prototypes .

commitment

Since the aircraft was already out of date when it appeared on the front in 1917, most of the DI were used for pilot training, but the Jastas (fighter squadrons) 7, 9, 11 and 14 and the Army Air Park South also had DI in their inventory.
