Gisulf II (* around 720 ; † 751 ) was Duke of Benevento around 732 and from 742 to 751 .

Life

Gisulf II was the son of dux Romuald II of Benevento and Gumperga, a niece of King Liutprand .

When Romuald II died in 731 or 732, a follow-up dispute broke out in which the usurper Audelahis initially asserted himself against Gisulf II, who was still a small child. He ruled for two years before he was overthrown by supporters of Gisulf. King Liutprand, who intervened in the dispute, appointed his own nephew Gregorius as dux and took Romuald's underage son Gisulf II to Pavia, where he raised him like a son. Liutprand married Gisulf around 736/737 to Scauniperga, a girl from a distinguished family ( nobili ortam progenie ), with whom he had the son Liutprand .

Dux Godescalcus had succeeded his late nephew Gregorius without the king's consent. When the duces Godescalcus of Benevento and Transamund II of Spoleto met in 739 with Pope Gregory III. Allies, Liutprand advanced with his army in 739 and Transamund fled to Rome. Godescalc was killed by the Beneventers on the run in 742 and Liutprand put his nephew Gisulf II as a dux .

In September 745 Gisulf donated land near Teano to the monastery of Santa Maria in Cingla and donated several churches to the Volturno monastery in 750.

After Gisulf's death in 751, his son Liutprand was his successor, for whom Gisulf's widow Scauniperga initially took over the reign.
