Liutprand (Benevento)
Liutprand (* around 740; † after 758) was Duke of Benevento from 751 to 758 .
Life
Liutprand was the son of dux Gisulf II of Benevento and his wife Scauniperga. In November 747, "Domna Scaniperga et Domnus ... Liuprand" gave the Volturno monastery some serfs. After Gisulf's death in 751, Liutprand was his successor and his mother Scauniperga took over the reign until 756.
After King Aistulf died in 756, a succession dispute broke out between his brother Ratchis and Desiderius . The central and southern Italian ducats Spoleto and Benevento took advantage of this weakness of royalty and became autonomous again.
King Desiderius consolidated his position in the Longobard Empire by marching into the Ducat Spoleto in 758 , capturing dux Alboin and initially not forgiving the ducat. Dux Liutprand von Benevento fled to Byzantine Otranto and Desiderius installed his son-in-law Arichis II in his office. Liutprand's further fate is not recorded.
