Solidus des dux Godescalcus

Godescalcus (also Godescalc, Gottschalk ; † 742 ) was Duke of Benevento from 739 to 742 .

Life

Godescalcus' origin is unknown. He was married to a woman named Anna.

After the death of his predecessor Gregorius in 739, Godescalcus became dux des Benevento from a party hostile to the monarchy without recognizing the right of royal appointment . Godescalcus and Anna donated several lands to the Volturno monastery.

King Liutprand had in alliance with Pope Gregory III. Subjugated the rebellious dux Transamund II of Spoleto and banished to a monastery, so that Godescalcus could not expect any support from any side. When Godescalcus found out in 742 that Liutprand was again approaching, he prepared to flee to Byzantium. His wife Anna was already on board a ship with all his valuables when he was attacked and killed by supporters of Gisulf II from Benevento. His wife managed to escape.

Liutprand appointed his nephew Gisulf II as dux of Benevento.
