In 1926 he moved to Turin and worked in the studio of the sculptor Michele Guerrisi (1893–1963).

Mastroianni lived and worked in Turin for most of his life. One of his most important works is the monument to the partisans in Turin, created in 1945 . His art received international recognition in the 1950s. In 1951 Mastroianni had his first solo exhibition in Paris at the Galerie de France . Umberto Mastroianni was, among other things, a participant in the XXIX. Venice Biennale in 1958 (where he won the prize for sculpture: “ Gran Premio Internazionale per la scultura ”) and also the documenta II in 1959 in Kassel .
