action

In Nazareth, the carpenter Joseph and Maria are engaged to each other. One night the angel Gabriel appears to Mary, who announces to her that she is to give life to the Messiah, the liberator longed for by the Jews. She travels to her relative Elizabeth, because, according to the angel, Elizabeth is also of good hope. In a distant land, three wise men, Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar, find out that a rising star is to herald the coming of a new king of the Jews, and then set off for Judea, the land of the sick and suspicious King Herod who has them followed and shadowed by his advisor Nikolaus.

After Mary's return to Nazareth, Joseph is horrified to discover that his fiancée is pregnant. Stunned, he decides to part with her. But an order from the emperor, according to which all inhabitants of the Roman Empire must travel to their hometowns in order to be counted there, prompted Joseph and Mary to set off for the southern city of Bethlehem.

In Bethlehem the story of the young shepherd Thomas is told. His young wife Lea has just given birth and is sickly close to death. Thomas needs money for medicine, but he doesn't have it because he has to pay increasing taxes to the emperor. He can no longer believe in the prophecy of a Messiah who is to come. He decides to fight the Romans and one day wrestles one of them to the ground. But before he kills him, he abandons his plan in fear and shame and just robs him.

One evening Thomas and other shepherds were sitting by the campfire when the angel Gabriel appeared to them. He announced to them the impending birth of the Messiah in the city of Bethlehem. According to Gabriel, the Messiah came for the poor among the people. In Bethlehem, Thomas and the other shepherds find Mary and Joseph in a stable. Here Mary gave birth to her son Jesus. Shortly afterwards, the three wise men arrive and offer gold, frankincense and myrrh as gifts to the new King of the Jews .
