Ruth Negga (born January 7, 1982 in Addis Ababa , Ethiopia ) is an Ethiopian - Irish actress .

Life

Negga was born in Addis Ababa in 1982, but grew up in Limerick, Ireland, from the age of four . Her Ethiopian father died in a car accident when Negga was seven years old.

After studying at Trinity College Dublin , she moved to London at the age of 18. At first she worked mainly in the theater before she was also seen in film and television productions from the mid-2000s. In 2004 she was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award in the category Most Promising Newcomer in an Affiliate Theater for her appearance in the play Duck at the Jerwood Theater Upstairs at the Royal Court.

In the same year she took on the role of illegal immigrant Taiwo in Ciaran O'Connor's drama Capital Letters . Shortly thereafter, she got the role in Neil Jordan's drama Breakfast on Pluto , who rewrote the script for Negga after seeing her in casting.

At the Berlinale 2006 Negga was named Shooting Star for Ireland.

In 2016, Negga starred as Mildred Loving in the drama Loving and as Lady Taria in the fantasy film Warcraft: The Beginning . For Loving she received 2017 a. a. an Oscar nomination for Best Actress . In addition, she was u. a. awarded the Black Reel Award .

In 2017 she was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
