Submissions

A total of 89 countries applied for the Best Foreign Language Film category, eight more than in the previous year , with submissions from Afghanistan , Armenia , Cameroon and Tunisia not being accepted. The film drama I Am Nojoom, Age 10 and Divorced by the director Khadija al-Salami was the first contribution from Yemen .

A shortlist of nine films was made from the 85 admitted entries and published on December 15, 2016. In addition to the five ultimately nominated films, the shortlist also included Simply the End of the World (Canada, director: Xavier Dolan ), The King's Choice - Attack on Norway (Norway, director: Erik Poppe ), Paradies (Russia, director: Andrei Konschalowski ) and My life as a zucchini (Switzerland, director: Claude Barras ).

Austria's candidate was the historical drama Before the Dawn by Maria Schrader . The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) had initially rejected the Austrian contribution and justified this with the imbalance of the creative participation . Since both the director, the screenwriter and the producer come from Germany, and the entire film was shot outside of Austria, Austria's participation in the film is too low to be considered an Austrian candidate. When AMPAS published the full list of nominated titles just a few days later, however, Vor der Morgenröte was among them, but was not shortlisted.

Entry ban from Asghar Farhadi

On January 27, 2017 , US President Donald Trump issued Executive Order 13769 with the title “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States” for citizens of the seven Muslim countries Iran , Iraq , Yemen , Libya , Somalia , and Sudan and Syria introduced a 90-day travel ban. This applied not only to refugees, but to all citizens of these countries (including business people, tourists, athletes, students, scientists, artists, journalists, etc.) and also applied to people who had a valid visa , as well as to people who were in possession of a green card . The only exceptions are diplomats , employees of international organizations and people who traveled to the United Nations .

The Iranian film director Asghar Farhadi , who was nominated in the category of best foreign language film for his film The Salesman, was initially also affected by this entry ban . Even before the decree was suspended, Farhadi decided to stay away from the award, even if there were exemptions for him. The Academy also commented on the entry ban:

“As supporters of filmmakers - and the human rights of all people - around the globe, we find it extremely troubling that Asghar Farhadi, the director of the Oscar-winning film from Iran, 'A Separation,' along with the cast and crew of This year's Oscar-nominated film 'The Salesman,' could be barred from entering the country because of their religion or country of origin. "

In a joint letter, the five directors nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category condemned the “fanatical and nationalist climate we are currently experiencing in the USA”. At the award ceremony, Farhadi had a statement read out which said:

“My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and the six other countries, who are despised by the inhumane entry ban in the USA. Anyone who divides the world into categories of 'we' and 'our enemies' creates fear.

[...]

Filmmakers can use their cameras to capture common human qualities and break stereotypes about different nationalities and religions. They create empathy between us and others. An empathy that we need today more than ever. [...] "

Honor Oscar

The honorary award winners selected by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were recognized at the eighth Governors Awards on November 12, 2016 . The winners at this gala dinner in the Ray Dolby Ballroom of the Hollywood & Highland Center were:

Jackie Chan , Hong Kong Chinese actor
Anne V. Coates , British film editor
Lynn Stalmaster , American casting director
Frederick Wiseman , American film director

In memoriam

The segment “In Memoriam”, with which each year a short video commemorates the most important deceased in the field of film, was presented by Jennifer Aniston . In her speech, Aniston also mentioned actor Bill Paxton , who died the previous day and could no longer be included in the segment. Sara Bareilles sang the song Both Sides, Now during the performance . The following artists were mentioned in the segment:

The failure to mention actors Garry Shandling , Robert Vaughn , Florence Henderson , Doris Roberts , Alexis Arquette , Burt Kwouk , Miguel Ferrer , Jon Polito and producer Dan Ireland, who also died in the last 12 months, was criticized .

Special occurrences

Error in announcing the best movie

In the final Best Picture category , Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway initially proclaimed the wrong winner, La La Land ; The actual winner, Moonlight, was only announced after the acceptance speeches by La La Land producers Jordan Horowitz , Marc Platt and Fred Berger . Beatty had mistakenly been handed the second copy of the envelope backstage with the previously announced winner of the Best Actress category , Emma Stone in La La Land . Two employees of the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers were responsible for handing over the envelopes, who , in the opinion of their employer, waited too long to correct the error. The employee who underwent this tweeted backstage photos - prohibited by the Oscar Academy - which, according to the media, could have distracted him from his task.

Error in the "In Memoriam" segment

Another error occurred in the "In Memoriam" section. Among other things, the costume designer Janet Patterson , who died in October 2016, was commemorated there. However, next to Patterson's name, a photo of the still living film producer Jan Chapman was displayed.
