James "Jamie" Dornan (born May 1, 1982 in Belfast , Northern Ireland ) is a British actor , photo model and musician .

life and career

Jamie Dornan was born in 1982 to Belfast gynecologist Jim Dornan. His mother Lorna died of pancreatic cancer when he was 16 years old, and his father developed leukemia in 2005 . Dornan's great-great- aunt is Oscar- winning American actress Greer Garson . He came into acting early on through his aunt, who ran an amateur theater club in Belfast. Dornan was already on stage in works by Anton Chekhov at the age of 12 . He attended Methodist College in his hometown. There he concentrated on the sport of rugby and passed, among other things, the A-level in the subjects of English literature and art history.

After graduating from school, Dornan played in the Harlequins rugby club in Belfast . In 2001, on the advice of his older sister, he attended an audition for the British television channel Channel 4's Model Behavior series , which looked for top models. Although he did not win the final bid for the TV reality series, he was signed by the model agency Select . He then dropped out of Teesside University and moved to London. The brunette, 1.83 m tall Northern Irishman has been in front of the camera with success in advertising campaigns by Calvin Klein , Armani , Gap , Tommy Hilfiger , Hugo Boss and Dolce & Gabbana , in which he alongside well-known models such as Natalja Vodjanowa , Kate Moss or Gisele Bündchen could be seen. He also appeared in editorial photo series for magazines such as GQ , L'Uomo Vogue , Elle and was the face of the Dior Homme campaigns by Christian Dior (autumn / winter 2006), Bulgari (autumn 2007) and Giorgio Armani (2009). Parallel to his career in the fashion industry, Dornan founded the folk band Sons of Jim together with his former school friend David Alexander in 1999 , in which he works as a lead singer and songwriter and plays the acoustic guitar. The band name was inspired by the two fathers Dornan and Alexander, who are both named Jim. 2006 they released their debut single My Burning Sun .

In August 2003, Dornan met Keira Knightley during a photo shoot for British jeweler Asprey . As the partner of the British actress, he became known to a wide audience. During their two-year relationship, which broke up in December 2005, Knightley introduced the Northern Irish to her talent agency PFD , who signed him as an actor. In 2006 he made his feature film debut alongside Kirsten Dunst in Sofia Coppola's costume film Marie Antoinette . Because of his resemblance to the British musician Adam Ant, Coppola had entrusted him with the role of Swedish Count Axel von Fersen . In 2008 he played the leading role in Matthias Hoene's horror film Beyond the Rave , while in the same year he stood in front of the camera in David Rocksavage's drama Shadows in the Sun at the side of well-known actors such as Jean Simmons or James Wilby .

He became famous in 2011 by the role of Sheriff Graham / The hunter in the ABC - fantasy series Once Upon a Time - Once upon a time ... . However, his character died after the seventh episode of the first season. Even so, he appeared twice in the series in the same role in 2012 and 2013.

Since 2013 he can be seen alongside Gillian Anderson in the BBC Two series The Fall - Death in Belfast as Paul Spector . In October 2013, it was announced that Dornan would take on the role of Christian Gray in the film adaptation of the novel Shades of Gray , Fifty Shades of Gray , announced for 2015 . The choice fell on him after he successfully completed a joint casting with colleague Dakota Johnson .

In Operation Anthropoid in 2016 he played the Czechoslovak resistance fighter Jan Kubiš , who carried out the assassination attempt on Reinhard Heydrich together with Jozef Gabčík .

Dornan lives in London. After his relationship with Keira Knightley, the English-language tabloids reported in the past about liaisons with Kate Moss , Sienna Miller or Mischa Barton , which he largely denied. He has been married to singer and actress Amelia Warner since April 2013 . They have a daughter together who was born at the end of November 2013. In March 2016, his wife gave birth to their second child.
