occupation

The King's Choice - Attack on Norway (original title Kongens nei ) is a historical epic by the director Erik Poppe from 2016 , which describes the situation in Norway immediately after the Wehrmacht invaded in April 1940. The Norwegian King Haakon stood in the way of the National Socialists during the attack by trying in vain to defend democracy and national independence. The cinema release in Norway was on September 23, 2016, the premiere in Germany on February 10, 2017 as part of the Berlinale .

action

Erik Poppe shows King Haakon , who is marked by life and back pain , who was exposed to the war during the attack by the German Wehrmacht on Norway on April 9, 1940 while fleeing from the hail of shells and bullets from German bombers and yet as head of state does not accept the conditions of the National Socialists . The consistent neutrality policy does not protect Norway from Hitler's aggression. Norway was bombed because of the king's stance not to collaborate .

The figures are not drawn one-dimensional, but complex. The Germans force a positioning. The king and the crown prince have a moral choice to make. The German envoy, the aged general confronted with the attack by the German military ships, and the young soldier Seeberg are confronted with circumstances in which morality, pride, dignity and self-confidence have concretely broken down and get along without pathos. They are all shown as human beings with the decisions they are faced with in the face of overwhelming political circumstances.

In Norway, the film was the biggest box office hit of 2016.

criticism

“A historical drama realized with a lot of effort, great actors and brilliant camera work. The backroom negotiations are sent dramatically, but also come to a head with some pathos. "
