Johan Söderqvist (* 11. February 1966 in Täby as Ulf Johan Söderqvist ) is a Swedish film composer .

Life

Johan Söderqvist was born in 1966 as Ulf Johan Söderqvist in the municipality of Täby, near Stockholm . He studied composition and instrumentation at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and then began playing as a keyboard player in jazz and folk bands such as Enteli and traveling around the world. In the late 1980s he recorded two records with the Swedish jazz band Mynta ( Bara För Langtan , 1986; Indian Time , 1987). In the early 1990s Söderqvist began working as a film composer and wrote the piano music for Anders Grönro's award-winning cinema production Agnes Cecilia - en sällsam historia . His first two film compositions already earned him the Swedish Grammis music award . This was followed by engagements for other film and television productions and Söderqvist was increasingly engaged for projects by renowned Scandinavian filmmakers such as Kjell-Åke Andersson , Mikael Hellström , Peter Lindmark , Henry Meyer , Thomas Vinterberg and Linus Torell . The Swedish film composer has been working together for many years with the Danish artist Susanne Bier and his compatriot Daniel Fridell , for whom he has so far set more than half of their respective film productions to music. The international breakthrough brought Söderqvist the score for Biers family drama Brothers - Between Brothers (2004), for which he received a nomination for the European Film Awards in 2005 and a prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 . Bier then used it for the Oscar- nominated Danish-Swedish co-production After the Wedding (2006) and her Hollywood debut Eine neue Chance (2007) with Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro . In 2008 he was responsible for the music of Tomas Alfredson's successful horror film So dark the night . One year later, the film music for Hermine Huntgeburth's Fontane film adaptation of Effi Briest followed , in which Julia Jentsch played the title role.

In addition to working on film and television productions, Söderqvist also created music for radio plays and plays. At the Riksteatern he was responsible for the music of Leif Stinnerbom's productions Gösta Berling (1992), Celestina (1996), Nils Holgersson (1999) and at the Stockholm Stadsteater for Philip Zandén's Hamlet (2004). In 2007 Söderqvist finished his first solo album for the Swedish record label Phono Suecia . In 2011 he composed the soundtrack for the Filipino thriller film The Road .
