Battlefield 1 is a first-person shooter from the Battlefield series that was developed by the Swedish computer game manufacturer DICE and published by Electronic Arts on October 21, 2016 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . The game was officially announced on May 6, 2016. The one in the title relates to the setting of the First World War , not to the part of the series.

Game description

Battlefield 1 takes place at the time of the First World War. The scenes include the western front , the Italian Alps and the Arabian desert. Contemporary vehicles and aircraft such as Mark V tanks and biplanes , as well as cavalry are playable. There are also poison gas attacks . The close combat is more in the foreground than in the previous games.

As with its predecessors, Battlefield 1 focuses on the multiplayer mode, the maps of which are designed for a maximum of 64 players. A campaign is planned for the single player mode . In this a series of so-called war stories are told, in which different fictional characters of the Entente are the focus. The multiplayer cards are playable with the classes assault soldier, medic, supply soldier and scout. In favor of a faster flow of the game, the capabilities and properties of vehicles and weapons were in part deliberately not authenticated, for example the maximum speeds of the vehicles and more use of automatic weapons.

In line with the theme of the First World War, developer DICE has provided so-called battle packs with objects and weapons in certain editions of the game, including the German fighter pilot Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen , the British officer and secret agent TE Lawrence and the Afro-American "Harlem Hellfighters" (369th Infantry Regiment).

Premium

Battlefield 1 has a premium service. By purchasing Premium Membership, Premium Members receive all four expansion packs for the game. They also benefit from a two-week early access to all expansions, access to new armies, 16 new multiplayer maps, new operations and game modes, new elite classes, 20 new weapons, new vehicles and, since November 2016, a total of 14 monthly battlepacks with individual weapon skins and exclusive dog tags.

Extensions

In March 2017, a game expansion (DLC) called They Shall Not Pass , which integrates the French army into the game, was released. Additional multiplayer features are also included, such as new vehicles.

In September 2017, the second game expansion In the Name of the Tsar , which brings the Russian army and the women's death battalion with it, was released. Five more new multiplayer maps and eleven new weapons were also added. A new multiplayer mode called "Supply Drop" has been added.

In December 2017, the first half of the third DLC Turning Tides was released , adding two new multiplayer maps and six new weapons to the game. The second half of the DLC will be released in the last week of January 2018. This will add two more maps focused on naval combat, as well as the British Royal Marines as a new playable faction.

The fourth and final expansion, Apocalypse , will follow in February 2018, adding five more multiplayer maps, a new game mode that focuses on aerial battles, and six more weapons to the game.

Game modes

In Battlefield 1 there were six different game modes from the release. With the expansions, four more game modes were added.

  • conquest
  • Team deathmatch
  • Rush
  • supremacy
  • War pigeons, two teams have to find pigeons on a smaller map, write a message and let them into the air. Three pigeons must be released each time. Your own pigeon can be killed by the opposing team.
  • Operations, a new mode in the Battlefield series in which a game round extends to up to 3 maps. Here one team tries to conquer the other's sectors, while the other team has to defend them with all their might. If the defender team manages to eliminate three enemy battalions of 250 entries each, the defenders have won the operation. However, if the attackers win, the battle continues on the next map. If the attackers manage to conquer all sectors on all maps, they have won the operation.

Subsequent game modes (a new mode with each DLC):

  • Frontlines (TSNP), a new game mode that stretches through different sectors of a map, with one team trying to break through the other team's sector. At the end of the card, two or three telegraph masts must be destroyed.
  • Supply drop (TSAR), another new game mode in which an area is marked on a map where the drop takes place. This area must be conquered.
  • Storm conquest (TT), a faster variant of conquest where a team has already conquered all flags. The other team already has a lead of 300 tickets.
  • Air combat (APOC), this game mode contains the variants normal dogfight , attacker and scourge. Here two teams fight against each other in airplanes.

cards

With the release of the game, 9 cards were released. Another card was submitted in December of the same year. With all the expansions, Battlefield 1 has a total of 31 cards.

  • Amiens
  • Argonne Forest
  • War in the ballroom
  • Monte Grappa
  • On the edge of the empire
  • Fortress of Faw
  • Suez
  • Sinai desert
  • Scar of St. Quentin
  • Shadow of the Giant (submitted in December update)

A total of 21 cards with the updates and extensions were submitted later. With each expansion, four to six new cards were added to the game, two of which had their own game modes:

They Shall Not Pass

  • Soissons, a picturesque mountain village during the Battle of the Marne .
  • Bruch, a river valley with surrounding villages and a bridge in the center.
  • Verdun Heights, a devastated area surrounded by forest fires, smoke and ash rain during the Verdun battle .
  • Fort Vaux , a partly underground, desperately contested fortress in France.
  • Prize de Tahure, a devastated city in France during the Nivelle offensive at night.

  • Brussilov-Bergfried, a Ukrainian village in the snow on a mountainside fought over by the Red and White Armies .
  • Volga, a snowy and devastated landscape in Russia on the Volga .
  • Tsaritsyn, a cathedral in the city of the same name that was fought over by the Red and White Armies .

Turning tides

Apocalypse

  • Caporetto, scene of the twelfth Battle of the Isonzo in the Italian Alps.
  • Somme, a series of partially burning fields with villages destroyed during the battle of the same name .
  • Passendale, a former village in Belgium during the third Battle of Flanders , which has turned into a hell of mud, corpses, gas and fire.
  • On a knife's edge (air combat-only card), a dogfight in single-seat aircraft over the Alps.
  • London Gets (dogfight-only card), a major dogfight over the British capital . Both teams have access to all possible aircraft. Furthermore, depending on the variant of the mode, the teams have an L30 airship available, which must be defended.

Innovations

The spawn menu is complemented by a 3D map that offers players an additional view that helps them better assess the situation at the re-entry point. In addition, the system has been made even more authentic when reloading and the movement system has also been renewed, so that you can climb slopes and close and open windows and doors, for example. The additional options also include new animations when entering vehicles.

Certain tanks can distribute predetermined aids, such as medkits.

The selection of aircraft is particularly characterized by a large number of bombers, which in turn are divided into different versions. While certain aircraft are designed to destroy tanks or ships, others focus on attacking infantry units. Aside from the bombers, there are still fighters that have a significantly lower speed compared to their predecessors due to the setting.

Battlepacks

As in Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline , Battlefield 1 has Battlepacks, but this time the focus has been on only one type of Battlepack. A Battlepack can contain different objects, even rarer objects are not limited to higher quality packs. There are two modified versions of the Battlepack: the Improved and the Superior Battlepack, they guarantee a weapon with a certain rarity. You can only get these modified versions against the in-game currency "scrap". Scrap is obtained when you receive a weapon skin or a bonus item and scrap it or when you play your first round of the day.

Opening a Battlepack always gives you a weapon skin in the rarity levels “Special”, “Outstanding” and “Legendary”. You may also be able to receive a rare bonus item - either an XP boost or a puzzle piece for a unique melee weapon. When you have collected all the puzzle pieces of a melee weapon, you can put them together and use them in the game.

In addition, the pools of Battlepack content rotate regularly, in the game they are called "versions".
