The Heligoland Bight is a German sea bay of the North Sea of up to 56 m deep southeastern part of the German Bight , the front of the Danish -English- Dutch coast at Helgoland is located. In addition to its actual marine area, the bay contains large parts of the German Wadden Sea with sandbanks , high sands and islands .
Geographical location and demarcation
The Helgoland Bay spreads across the sea areas in the southeastern part of the German Bight that are east to south-east to south of the island of Helgoland . Thus it is its northwestern border area.
Its northern boundary runs from Heligoland to the east to the Schleswig-Holstein coast of the Dithmarschen region . From the North Frisian peninsula Eiderstedt there , it turns southwards past the Eider estuary and Meldorfer Bucht to the estuary of the Elbe estuary located further south near Brunsbüttel with the southwestern end of the Kiel Canal . The southern part of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park with the island of Trischen and the sandbank Tertius , which are in front of the Meldorfer Bay to the west, and the high sand Blauort to the north of it , which is in front of the peninsula Eiderstedt, is located in coastal areas along the eastern boundary of the bay .
Beyond or south of the mouth of the Elbe, the southeast boundary of the Heligoland Bay runs westwards along the Lower Saxony coast of the state of Hadeln to Cuxhaven . From there it turns south along the coast of the state of Wursten with a small area of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and the adjacent Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park . The island of Neuwerk with its neighboring islands of Scharhörn and Nigehörn is located in the last-mentioned national park or Wadden Sea area . Subsequently, the south-east delimitation continues along the coast of the state of Wursten with other coastal areas of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park and the Hoher Knechtsand sandbank there further south to the mouth of the Weser funnel near Bremerhaven .
Beyond and to the west of Wesermündung runs the Südabgrenzung the Helgoländer bay west along the coast of Lower Saxony short portion of the peninsula Butjadingen to Außenjade , the north from the particularly by the Jade fed Jadebusen leading and Jade fahrwasser said waterway. The sea area north of this stretch of coast, in which the island of Mellum is located, is also part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.
Beyond or west of the Outer Jade , its western boundary runs northwards along the short Lower Saxon coastal section of the Jeverland to Cape Schillighörn near the village of Schillig . It then leads north to the East Frisian Islands with the island of Minsener Oog to the east of the coast and the island of Wangerooge to the north-west of this ; south of the chain of islands lies the Lower Saxony coast of East Frisia . The sea area in front of this stretch of coast also belongs to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. The remainder of the western boundary of the bay leads northwards through the North Sea to Helgoland.

One of the busiest shipping lanes in the world runs through the Heligoland Bay in an east-west direction , the one from Hamburg or the Elbe estuary past Cuxhaven and Neuwerk and then on through the North Sea to the Strait of Dover and then on through the English Channel to the Atlantic leads.
Protected areas
There are many protected areas in the Helgoland Bay : nature reserves such as the Heligoland rock shelf , the red sand and the coastal sea off the East Frisian Islands , as well as the national parks Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea (east), Hamburg Wadden Sea (southeast) and Lower Saxony Wadden Sea (southeast and south) .
