The Heligoland rock shelf is a marine nature reserve (NSG) in the North Sea belonging to Schleswig-Holstein ( Germany ) . It was designated in 1981 and, with an area of 5138 hectares, is one of the largest nature reserves in Schleswig-Holstein.

The two parts of the area include sea areas around the islands of Helgoland and Düne . The landside area boundary is the mid-tide high water line . The two islands themselves and the part of the North Sea between them with the roads are not part of the area.

The Heligoland rock plinth, which reaches a depth of 48 meters, is the only hard-bottom marine biotope in Germany; the underwater bottom surface consists of rock and sand. Above all, the submarine cliffs are the habitat of the European lobster and the location of the seaweed forests formed by numerous types of algae , which are unique to Germany; see list of sea algae from Heligoland . A special part of the rock base is the Heligoland rock floodplain, which regularly dries up depending on the tide, in the north and west of the island.

In § 3 of the state regulation: "The reserve serves to preserve the diversity of geological phenomena of Helgoland cliff base with its habitats of wild plants and wild animals, including their biological communities and habitats." Since 1983, the nature reserve is the club Jordsand for the Protection of seabirds and cared for by nature .

Large areas of the nature reserve are part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas : The FFH area DE-1813-391 Helgoland with a Helgoland rock base , which also includes the neighboring Lummenfelsen nature reserve and some other land areas, especially on the dune, is almost identical . In addition, the nature reserve is almost entirely in the much larger EU bird reserve DE-1813-491 Helgoland sea bird reserve .
