The Eschschallen nature reserve in the Seestermüher Vorland is located in the Seestermüher Marsch . It stretches about 5 kilometers along the Elbe dike between the Pinnau and Krückau estuaries and outside the Seestermüher foreland . It has an area of around 306 hectares and serves to preserve a natural river bank landscape with rare freshwater mud flats and their special animal and plant species. The 500 to 800 meter wide strip is traversed by tidal ditches and tidal creeks and is flooded several times a year when the floods are high. The rare freshwater mud flats are exposed twice a day and then flooded again.
The Eschschallen are the rest of a Urstom landscape with a largely natural habitat. There are rows of poplar and willow trees in this area. In the damp areas along the Elbe, reeds with plumes of water and cattails as well as purple loosestrife , archangelwort and other endangered plant species grow. The native bird world consists of bearded tits , bag tit , bluethroat , reed bunting , pond warbler and other rare birds. In 2002 a pair of white- tailed eagles nested in the nature reserve for the first time, and in 2003 they successfully raised a young bird. In 2004, however, the pair of white-tailed eagles was disturbed by unsuspected felling work.
At the mouth of the pinna in front of the pinnacle barrier, a fish sanctuary is also designated in accordance with Section 7 of the Schleswig-Holstein coastal fishing regulations.
