The Holmmoor nature reserve is located in the south of the city of Quickborn and west of the federal motorway 7 around 30 kilometers north of Hamburg city center. It is about 110 hectares and has been a nature reserve since March 1994. In the area there are still raised bogs several meters high as the core zone. A directly adjacent wet green area serves as a buffer zone and is largely in the area of the municipality of Hasloh .

The Mühlenau rises on the eastern edge of the area, directly on the motorway .

The Holmmoor is one of the typical low -nutrient raised bogs in Schleswig-Holstein that are fed by rainwater. It was created over the course of thousands of years by the swamping of a damp depression and no longer has any connection to the groundwater . The moor had a much larger area, reaching in the east to the border of the Pinneberg district . Through peat extraction up to the middle of the 20th century and subsequent settlement, but also through intensive agricultural use, it was heavily drained and reduced in size. The construction of the Federal Motorway 7 through the Holmmoor damaged it and cut it up. It is still negatively influenced by the motorway today. Since 1978 attempts have been made to restore the Holmmoor to a natural state.

Rare plants such as bell heather , bog berries and rosemary heather grow on the evenly wet peat . Occasionally sundew can also be found, a plant that feeds on small insects. Other plants in the areas with changing humidity include birch and pipe grass .

The wildlife in Holmmoor consists of many species of dragonflies , butterflies and amphibians such as the moor frog . The poisonous adder and rare birds such as the teal , common snipe and little owl can also be found .
