Battlefield Hardline is a first-person shooter that was developed by Visceral Games in collaboration with Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts on March 19, 2015. Battlefield Hardline is the 13th game in the Battlefield series . It differs from the previous parts in the new setting, in which the player has the opportunity to slip into the role of the police or the criminal. The game breaks through the usual military scenery. The main focus of the game is, as in the previous parts, on the multiplayer mode, for which there were mainly positive reviews.

Plot overview

prehistory

In the Battlefield Hardline story, the player slips into the role of Police Detective Nick Mendoza. Miami  is involved in a drug war and Nick has just been promoted to detective. With his new partner, veteran detective Khai Minh Dao, he traces the traces of drug deals, from street sales to the source. In a number of cases, the partners realize that power on the one hand and corruption on the other hand play a crucial role in the law. Together with his partner, he solves various cases related to the drug war in Miami and combats corruption.

action

Miami Police Detective Nick Mendoza and Carl Stoddard conduct a 2012 drug raid that ends in violence. After they both capture an escaping suspect, Captain Julian Dawes decides that Nick should work on a new case with Police Detective Khai Minh Dao. Her target is the drug dealer Tyson Latchford (Adam J. Harrington). You can find out that there is a new drug called "Hot Shot" floating around in Miami. Through the captured Latchford, they learn that Leo Ray (Graham Shiels) has information on the new drug. He explains to them that Remy Neltz (TJ Storm) is selling the new drug.

Leo's information leads the two detectives to the Everglades , where the drugs are stored. After examining the area of the alleged camp, they find multiple traces of Neltz's drug activities and the mutilated body of Leo, who was murdered for cooperating with the police. Neltz managed to escape, but soon afterwards they found his hiding place. Since he has a deal with Stoddard, Stoddard murders him. Nick leaves the other two policemen in indignation that Stoddard and Khai illegally take money with them before more policemen arrive. Dawes later calls partners Nick and Khai back to the warehouse to gather evidence against Stoddard. You find a recording in which Neltz incriminates Nick's old partner. Dawes, who subsequently destroys the incriminating material against Stoddard, reveals at the same time that he and Khai are also corrupt. The three of them accuse Nick of their own crimes as he refuses to follow the same path as them. He has to go to jail.

Three years later, in 2015, Nick escapes a prison bus with the help of Tap Milstein and Tyson. Khai is now on a personal vendetta against Dawes and Stoddard and Nick decides to go to Los Angeles with her and Tyson . Khai informs Nick that Dawes has set up his own private security company, Prefered Outcomes. Khai asks Nick and Tyson to meet Marcus "Boomer" Boone. Then the three follow a trail to Neil Roarks' house. While meeting with Roark, Nick comes up with the idea of stealing Dawes' money before he can launder it. He uses Khai's phone as a makeshift surveillance device, which he hides in a briefcase. This suitcase is to be taken to the place where the rest of the Dawes money lies. Then they flee the house.

After learning that Dawes is hiding his money in a burglar-proof safe in the penthouse of his corporate headquarters, Boomer calls a former ally who can get him a robot for the job. Boomer and Nick meet up in the desert with Contact, his ex-girlfriend Dune, who sets up a meeting with her father Tony Alpert. Alpert reveals her because he knows that Nick has broken out of prison and that Stoddard has offered him a reward should he catch him alive. Nick and Boomer escape their prison and are able to obtain their equipment from Alpert's accomplices. They then find out that Alpert was involved in the development of the drug Hot Shot. Dune helps the two escape to an abandoned airfield. At the airfield, Nick receives the robot and the two of them escape on an airplane that Boomer has repaired.

As Khai, Nick, Boomer and Tyson prepare to leave for Miami, they are ambushed by Stoddard and his men. Nick kills his former partner and sends a photo of the body to Dawes. When the group infiltrated the Preferred Outcomes main building in Miami, they were caught in a booby trap in front of the vault, in which Tyson was seriously injured. Nick takes the incoming call on Khai's phone from the safe. At the other end of the line is Dawes, who wants to meet him near Santa Rosita off the Florida coast. Nick drives to the island without his group; the others are trying to find medical care for Tyson in the meantime. Nick finds his former, corrupt captain in his office. Dawes wants Nick to join the company and take over if Dawes dies. Dawes says the two are very similar, more criminal than cop. Nick agrees and hesitantly shoots Dawes. As he searches Dawes' office, he finds a letter from him explaining why he decided to betray Nick three years ago. There is also a description of an underground safe that houses all of Dawes' property. This fortune now belongs to Nick, who is at a loss as to what to do with it.

Characters

The following section gives an overview of the main characters and their relationship to one another.

  • Nicholas "Nick" Mendoza: Nick is the character played by the player in the single player campaign. He is the protagonist of the game and fights his former partner Carl Stoddard and his former Captain Julian Dawes due to corruption. He is of Cuban descent and works as a police detective with Khai Minh Dao. In the English version he is voiced by Philip Anthony-Rodiguez. His facial expressions were recorded with the help of Nicholas Gonzalez .
  • Carl Stoddard is Nick's former partner. He is a corrupt cop who does business with the drug dealers in and around Miami. He is known, among other things, as the right hand of the also corrupt police captain Julian Dawes. He also has business relationships with the drug dealer Remy Neltz, who sells the new drug "Hot Shot". Stoddard is spoken by Travis Willingham in English.
  • Julian Dawes is the captain of Nick and Stoddard. After destroying incriminating evidence against Stoddard, he, Stoddard and Khai attach the evidence to Nick, who then has to go to jail. Dawes founds his own private security company, with which he launders money for drug traffickers, among other things. He is the leader of a network of corrupt police officers and other nationals. Stoddard is his right-hand man who does most of Dawes' business. Dawes is spoken in English by Benito Martinez .
  • Khai Minh Dao is a Vietnamese-American police officer. After Nick is promoted to detective, he is assigned to Khai as a partner. After Nick goes to jail, she becomes one of the key figures in Dawes' newly formed security company. After an accident, she leaves the company and cannot start working with the police again. With her reputation shattered, she tries everything to bring down Stoddard and Dawes. Kelly Hu speaks Khai .
  • Marcus "Boomer" Boone is a former intelligence specialist in the US military. After retiring from his career, he made a living as a Gray Hat Hacker. After Nick gives him the opportunity to use his skills for good, he agrees to help him for a fee. He had a relationship with Dune Alpert in the past. Since the relationship was ended by her father, he does not have a good relationship with Tony Alpert. In English, Boomer is spoken by Eugene Byrd .
  • Dune Alpert is the daughter of Tony Alpert. She had a relationship with Marcus Boone, but it came to an end. When business with Boomer, Nick, and her father goes wrong, she helps them both escape. It is voiced by Alexandra Daddario .

Through a fake deal with Nick and Boomer, he wants to personally take revenge on Boomer and hand Nick over to Stoddard for the bounty. He is the brain behind the development of the new drug "Hot Shot". It is spoken in English by Fred Tatasciore.
  • Remy Neltz is a Miami drug dealer. He is one of the main characters dealing with the new drug "Hot Shot".

Gameplay

Players either slip into the role of a member of a special police force or that of a criminal.

The focus of the game is, in contrast to the previous versions of the series , which dealt with the military aspect, on the fight against crime. The main parties in the game are the special police unit and their counterpart, the criminals. The player has access to equipment at a military-like level. In addition, common police equipment such as stun guns and handcuffs is available to the player.

Like Battlefield 4 , Battlefield Hardline relies on the destruction of the environment ( called Levolution in English ) in order to complete missions. On the “Downtown” map, for example, it is possible to bring down a construction crane in order to demolish a building. Every map in the game features large and small objects that can be destroyed.

In Battlefield Hardline , in contrast to other parts of the series, new game models have been introduced:

  • Heist (assault) : The criminals have to break into a vault filled with money (in some cards also an armored vehicle) and transport the captured bags full of money to a certain point. The police are trying to stop them. Once the criminals get all the money to the target point, they win the game.
  • Blood Money : Both factions, police officers and criminals, must recover money from a box in the center of the map. Then the monetary units must be brought to the respective armored vehicle on the side. It is possible to steal money from the other truck. The team that first deposited five million dollars in their own truck wins. After a set time, the team that has accumulated more money in its own truck wins.
  • Hotwire : In this mode, moving cars take on the role of flags known from other capture-the-flag games. The vehicles can be captured by driving them over a certain speed. Every car that is captured by your own team causes the opponent to lose points. The team that has zero points first loses. After a certain amount of time, the game is over and the winner is the team with the most points remaining.
  • Rescue : In a three-minute game in 5-on-5 mode, the police SWAT team must try to rescue hostages or kill all of the hostage-takers. The other side wins when it kills all the cops. Each player only has one life in this mode, there is no respawn .
  • Crosshair : In this game mode, ten players in two teams play against each other for 3 minutes. Each player also only has one life. The police escort a witness. The criminals try to kill this witness and win if they succeed. The cops win if the witness reaches the target point.

Visceral Games confirmed that the single player campaign is not linear and should be better than that of the predecessor. The campaign is divided into different episodes, in which decisions made are intended to influence the course of the campaign. The police badge can be used by police officers to trick suspicious people into putting their weapons on the ground.

development

Like Battlefield 4, Battlefield Hardline works with the Frostbite 3 engine. It uses the controversial anti-cheat technology PunkBuster . Battlefield Hardline was revealed in a blog post on the EA Blog by Vice President of Visceral Games, Steve Papoutsis. The game was announced for E3 2014, but some information was announced beforehand. Unlike other games in the Battlefield series, in which military aspects are in the foreground, Hardline focuses on the counterplay between police and criminals.

A first beta version of Battlefield Hardline was released on June 14, 2014 after it was announced at Electronics Entertainment Expo 2014. This first beta was released for PC and Playstation 4 and ended on June 26, 2014. The beta for all platforms started on February 3, 2015 and ended on February 10, 2015.

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2014, EA confirmed that the game will run on the Playstation 4 at 1080p. A similar performance is targeted for the Xbox One version. On March 8, 2015, however, Visceral Games announced that the game will only run at 900p on the Playstation 4 and at 720p on the Xbox One version. On February 3rd, 2015 the beta version of Battlefield Hardline was released for all platforms. It is estimated that seven million players participated in the beta. The beta received mostly positive reviews from gamers and critics. On February 24th, Electronic Arts reported that the game was in the final stages of development and ready for production.

publication

On July 22, 2014, EA announced that they had postponed the game's release from October 21, 2014 to March 17, 2015. The reason for this was the possibility to incorporate improvements based on the feedback from the open beta phase.

The Premium Edition of the game was announced on March 2, 2015. Players who have bought the Premium Edition receive some additional functions, for example masks, an armory where players can design their weapons, and the "Legendary Status", which plays a role in progressing in the game. Four expansion packages were announced on the same day. As in the Battlefield 4 Premium Program, buyers of the Premium Edition will get access to the expansion packages two weeks earlier. Four new maps and several new weapons, vehicles and masks have been integrated into the game with the first expansion pack, Criminal Activity . According to lead multiplayer developer Zach Mumbach, the expansion will put more focus on the destructibility of objects. In June 2015 a new game mode ("Bounty Hunter") was also introduced. The second expansion, Robbery , integrates a new 5-on-5 multiplayer mode, new weapons and the "Legendary Super Feature". The extension was released in September 2015. The third expansion, Getaway , which contained a new mode ("Capture the Bag"), was released on January 12, 2016.

Problems arose even before the publication, as the game was announced in advance by various portals before Electronic Arts itself published a notice. In addition, the problems associated with the predecessor Battlefield 4 put a strain on the release. The retail version of Battlefield Hardline rose in the first week after publication No. 1 on the software charts of the United Kingdom one.

Voice actor

The German synchronization was carried out by the recording studio "rain productions GmbH & Co KG" from Cologne. Carsten Arnold and Daniel Käser directed the dialogue. The German band 257ers , the Game One journalist Christian Gürnth and the German rapper Rockstah can be heard in small supporting roles .

Reviews

Battlefield Hardline receives mediocre to good reviews. The GameRankings website, which collects ratings and calculates an average value from the results, awards 73.16% for the Playstation 4 version (based on 38 ratings). The Metacritic site, which also determines an average value from various test reports, awards 73 out of 100 possible points (based on 46 ratings) for the Playstation 4 version of Battlefield Hardline.

The single player campaign is rated positively in a test report by Thomas Freund for Netzwelt with regard to the "exciting" entry. The first episode is referred to as the "bombastic introduction". The other episodes of the game could not build on this start. The setting is not particularly convincing because of the missing soundscape of the weapons, which stood out in previous Battlefield parts. A special cop feeling, as in US series and films, is missing. When completing a mission, the game relies on other tactical means such as sneaking up to complete missions without having to take out every enemy unit. The technology behind it could not always implement these tactics satisfactorily in practice, so that "all sorts of absurd scenes [arise], which is largely due to the stupid opponents". The reward system sometimes seems conceptless. The free-to-play integration stands out particularly negatively. Various products can be purchased for multiplayer, which, according to Freund, "is completely wrong for a full-price title".

IGN's Brian Albert describes Battlefield Hardline as a game for everyone. The single player mission and also the multiplayer offer different aspects in all areas. The single player mode promises great shooter action as well as great sneak action. The tactical multiplayer is as good as in the parts before. Albert also praised the ability to complete missions without having to use his weapon. The possibility of taking criminals into custody while still alive creates more room for maneuver. Playing the missions without using one's weapons should be as entertaining as using weapons. The reward system is emphasized negatively, which does not adapt to the play style, but always gives weapons as a reward. According to Albert, the plot of the story could already be known as it does not introduce any new elements. Nevertheless, the characters are designed to be funny and personable. The evil characters still didn't leave a lasting impression.

Player and sales numbers

During the beta test for all platforms in February 2015, the game could be played for free for one week. During this beta, up to 387,000 players took advantage of the offer for testing. Compared to the successor title Battlefield 1 , which reached up to 681,000 players, the test phase of Battlefield Hardline was less successful. The number of players dropped dramatically after the first few months of sales. After a little over a year, only 25,000 players could be recorded. The predecessor Battlefield 4 was still played by 80,000 people on the same day (as of 05.2015). There were only just under 2900 players on the PC version, 9300 on the Xbox One version and 11,700 on the Playstation 4 version. The development improved in the following month. A total of up to 55,000 players played daily in June, but only 2000 players on the PC. The increase is explained by a sales discount from the manufacturer and various in-game bonuses.

In the first week after sales launch, Battlefield Hardline was sold a total of 1.4 million times. The Playstation 4 version had the largest share with almost 760,000 units sold, followed by the Xbox One version with 430,000 units. The PC version landed in last place with only 25,000 games sold. Further sales figures were not announced by the publisher EA, especially after the first year. Only in the annual report for 2015 was it mentioned that 30 million gaming sessions were held.

Trivia

Many players were surprised when Electronic Arts did not release the successor to Battlefield 4 , as usual, two years after the predecessor, but after one year. The publisher responded to the reactions by stating that the early publication was only an exception and that the other parts would be published every two years, like their predecessors.
