Spawn

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With (re) spawn (from the English spawn to : produce ) the (re-) entry of a game character, one is non-player character or an object on a specific or random spawn (dot) in a level of a computer game called. It is often used in multiplayer online games .

In shooters

In first person shooters as well as in third person shooters (especially in their multiplayer mode ) the entry into a level is called spawning . Here the player materializes in the virtual environment in order to then take part in the game. If it is a team game, there are usually certain fixed starting points for each team, which are called spawn points.

As respawn of returning to work after a death is referred to in an ongoing round. In classic first person shooters with high game pace, such as the Quake or Unreal series, it is common for players to respawn immediately or a short time after their death in order to participate in the game again. Weapons and ammunition previously collected are lost after respawning (or when the character dies) and the life energy is reset to the default value. In Deathmatch mode the number of respawns is unlimited, in Last Man Standing mode it is set to a certain number. In other games, however, there is only one spawn per game round for each player (typical example: Counter-Strike ).

The respawn time describes the time that you have to wait to be able to spawn again after the virtual character has died. This time can vary depending on the game and game mode. In shooters and modes that have no (or only a very short) "spawn time", you get in as soon as you press the fire button. In deathmatch in particular, so-called force respawn is very common, in which a re-entry is forced immediately or after a period has expired.

In some game modes you can choose the spawn point, which can be an additional tactical element. In the Battlefield series, for example, the “spawn points” are related to the flags to be captured or defended. Depending on the tactical situation, the team can choose from more or fewer “spawn points”.

In some games, the "spawning" process can be abused by waiting for opponents to appear near the "spawn points" in order to take them by surprise when they suddenly reappear. This procedure is called Spawncampen or Spawnkilling , "spawntrapping" or base camping . It is generally regarded as unsportsmanlike behavior, because the "spawning" opponent is in a much weaker position: He is unprepared, cannot see the local situation before the "spawn" and is (in many games) only minimally equipped with a starting weapon .

In many games, "spawn camping" is therefore made more difficult because the spawn points are far apart and are selected at random by the program. Some games counter spawn camping with the spawning player being invulnerable for a short time. This gives him the opportunity to grasp the new game situation and, if necessary, to seek cover before he can be injured by an opponent. In some games (e.g. Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 or Battlefield 3) you encounter spawn killing with inaccessible spawn areas, that is, as soon as an opponent has reached a certain proximity to the spawn area, he is fatally injured. Sometimes the whereabouts of the "spawncampers" are briefly displayed after the player's death, so that the player often has the opportunity to quickly seek suitable cover during respawn or to open fire directly on the opponent.

In MMORPGs

With spawning in MMORPGs accidental release of often mobs meant. The monsters killed by the player characters (also called avatars ) are brought back into the game, so that monsters are prevented from missing. In most cases this is done by simply appearing in the respective area.

However, the term is also used when a character dies. In contrast to the so-called rezzen (from English resurrection = "resuscitation"), in this case a dead SC is not resuscitated on the spot, but teleported to a "spawn point" . In most cases this is a central city or a cemetery, in some games it is also a resurrection shrine.

In World of Warcraft , for example, killed monsters are regenerated at regular intervals. In the event of the avatar's death, the player then has to return with his ghost from a nearby cemetery to the place of death in order to pick up his remains there and thus mitigate the negative effects of death. Alternatively, the player can be resuscitated at the graveyard by a spirit healer, but this is associated with damage to armor.
