Unreal is a computer game series from Epic Games that belongs to the first person shooter genre .

The Unreal series published by GT Interactive in 1998 ushered in a new era in the first-person shooter genre. Today, Unreal is one of the classics in the genre and stands for many technical and playful innovations.

Unreal

Unreal

Unreal was developed by Epic Games and published by GT Interactive in 1998. Similar to Half-Life , which appeared in the same year, the game was characterized in particular by the seamless display of a coherent, atmospherically successful game world.

Unreal Mission Pack 1: Return to Na Pali
Return to Na Pali is the expansion pack for Unreal that was released in May 1999 and is directly linked to its plot.

Unreal II: The Awakening

Unreal II: The Awakening (short: Unreal II ) takes place in the same world as the first part of Unreal , but introduces a new storyline and new locations. The title, originally limited to single player mode , was developed by Legend Entertainment and released in February 2003 after many years of development. Like Unreal Tournament 2003 , the game is based on Unreal Engine 2 . A conversion for the Xbox was launched in February 2004.

Unreal II: eXpanded MultiPlayer
Unreal II: eXpanded MultiPlayer (short: XMP ) is a free expansion for Unreal II and only provides the originally missing multiplayer functionality. The extension was released in December 2003.

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament

Unreal Tournament (short: UT or UT99 ) is the second title in the series, released in 1999, and is more or less a pure multiplayer game (single player has no campaign, see Quake III Arena ). In 2000 a version for the PlayStation 2 and 2001 one for Dreamcast was released.

Unreal Tournament 2003

Unreal Tournament 2003 (short: UT2003 or UT2k3 ) was released at the end of 2002 after the great success of its predecessor. In addition to numerous, mainly optical changes, it was difficult to build on the predecessor due to the changed gameplay . The game is also intended as a pure multiplayer title and also relies on the newly developed, second generation of the Unreal Engine .

Unreal Tournament 2004

Unreal Tournament 2004 appeared on the international market in 2004 and is in many ways similar to its predecessor ( UT2003 ). In addition to numerous innovations, this time mainly of a technical nature (controllable vehicles, new weapons, better AI ), the main focus was on the gameplay. This has been adapted to the traditional UT99 gameplay for the benefit of the players and thus better received by the fan base.

Unreal Tournament 3

Unreal Tournament 3 (formerly Unreal Tournament 2007 ) is the fourth game in the series to feature Unreal Engine 3 and was released on November 12, 2007 as a world premiere in Germany. In addition to the usual PC (including Windows / Mac OS X ) version, a version for the PlayStation 3 from Sony was also planned for the start of sales , but this was only released in 2008. The version followed due to a "temporary" exclusive deal between Epic Games and Sony for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console also only later. An implementation for the Nintendo console Wii was initially due to their weak processing power than excluded.

Unreal Championship

Unreal Championship

Unreal Championship was released in November 2002 and is the first title in the series that is only available for a console (namely the Xbox ). From a fundamental point of view, the title differs from UT2003 only in small details , such as the fact that the different characters have slightly different properties (e.g. with regard to speed, jump height or life energy).

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict

Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict was released as the second title exclusively for a console. The Unreal Engine 2X, which was specially modified by Microsoft for the Xbox, was used for this . The main difference between the game and its predecessors is that there is a greater focus on hand-to-hand combat. Each species has its own edged weapon , which can also be used, for example, to repel projectiles from long-range weapons. In close combat, the perspective automatically changes to the third-person perspective .

Unreal Engine

The Unreal Engine ( UE ) has been the main rival of id Software's Quake Engine since its appearance . Even the first version of the engine, which appeared in 1998 together with the first Unreal title, technically far surpassed the competitor's capabilities. The game was delivered together with various modification tools (such as the map editor UnrealEd and the script language UnrealScript ), so it became very popular within a short time. In addition to the aforementioned Quake Engine, the Unreal Engine is one of the most important 3D game engines on the computer game market.

UnrealScript

UnrealScript is the scripting language of the Unreal Engine , its structure is similar to Java and has features of an object-oriented programming language.

UnrealEd

The UnrealEd ( Unreal Editor ) is the level editor that is delivered together with the Unreal Engine and its games. With it, the user can create new maps or levels himself and even program entire modifications.
