Unreal Tournament 2003 , UT2003 or UT2k3 for short , is a futuristic first-person shooter that was developed by Digital Extremes and Epic Games and published by Atari SA at the end of 2002 as the second part of the multiplayer series of the Unreal series .

technology

The game is based on the 2nd generation of the Unreal Engine and was the first game in the Unreal series to contain vehicles that could be controlled by the player (however, these could only be found in a hidden demo map , vehicles were only officially introduced with the successor). At that time, the greatest competitor was the Halo developed by Bungie , which was already using steerable aircraft and vehicles in multiplayer mode on a large scale. In the previous Unreal Tournament , vehicles and planes were only available via mods .

One of the main programmers of the Windows version of the game is the scene great Tim Sweeney . The porting to Linux and Mac OS X was done by Ryan C. Gordon .

Storyline and game design

The Liandri Mining Corporation is starting a new championship to test the skill and strength of various gladiators and to award the winner a large prize money.

Like its predecessor, Unreal Tournament 2003 focuses on online or network games, although you can also play with computer-simulated players, so-called bots . The maps of UT2003 are designed accordingly : a nested structure with multiple overlapping paths promotes a fast, varied game.

Game modes

Unreal Tournament 2003 has six game modes:

Compared to its predecessor, Assault is missing as a game mode, and domination has been replaced by double domination.

Protection of minors

The game is on the index for media harmful to minors in Germany, although the German version has been modified and censored (green blood, no detachable body parts). With a blood patch , however, the game could easily be reset to the uncensored English version with a more realistic representation. Therefore, the federal inspection agency for media harmful to minors decided to index the game .

successor

There are now two more games in the Unreal Tournament series on the market: Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Tournament 3 .
