Kon-Tiki is a Norwegian biographical film drama from 2012 about researcher and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl and his Kon-Tiki expedition and its members. The film was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg . Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen played the leading role .

The film generally received good to very good ratings from Norwegian film critics. The production costs totaled 93 million crowns, making it the most expensive Norwegian film to date. It has been sold in 33 countries so far. Kon-Tiki was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar , each in the category for the best foreign language film.

action

The film tells the dramatic story of Thor Heyerdahl and his expedition in 1947. Contrary to the established scientific thesis about immigration from Asia, Heyerdahl wants to prove his spectacular theory that Polynesia was settled by South America 1,500 years ago . In order to support his theory, he wants to organize a crossing, as it could have taken place back then. In doing so, he wants to use the possibilities and means that would have been available to the potential settlers.

Heyerdahl teamed up with five other men, the engineer Watzinger, the radio operator Torstein Raaby, the etymologist Knut Magne Haugland, the cook Bengt Danielson and the seaman and painter Erik Hesselberg. After meeting up in Norway, they fly to Peru to complete their travel arrangements. It is very difficult to raise money for the project. The men together build a raft from balsa logs according to the old South American tradition . There is a hut on the deck and a mast holds the rectangular sail. Heyerdahl baptizes the raft with the name Kon-Tiki , a creator god from the mythology of the Incas , who is also known as Qun Tiksi Wiraqucha . The five young adventurers around Heyerdahl didn't or hardly knew each other before the start of the expedition, and only one of them had experience in sailing. Heyerdahl himself is also a little afraid of water and cannot swim. But he is ready at any price to risk everything for his project. Heyerdahl's wife separates from him during the raft trip.

From Callao, Peru , they begin their long, arduous and dangerous journey through the Pacific. At first they are drifting on the wrong course until the ocean current leads them to Polynesia. Apart from the radio, Heyerdahl's team has no modern equipment and is exposed to the forces of nature and numerous privations every day. The ties between the tree trunks are loosened and Watzinger urgently asks Heyerdahl to secure them with a modern steel cable. Heyerdahl refuses.

Despite some setbacks, the expedition was a success and finally they covered about 7,000 kilometers (3,770 nm) with the Kon-Tiki raft at an average speed of 1.5  knots . After 101 days, the raft ran aground off Raroia in the Tuamotu Archipelago . Heyerdahl can thus show that the crossing by means of a simple raft would have been possible even then.

backgrounds

Emergence

In 1950 Thor Heyerdahl published a self-produced documentary under the same name Kon-Tiki , in which the expedition members were involved. In this film, some self-made authentic photos and film recordings of their crossing were included. The 1950 documentary won an Oscar in 1952 in the “ Best Documentary ” category . In 1955 Heyerdahl presented another documentary film on the same topic, Galapagos .

In 2012, production of the feature film on the subject began in Norway. Locations and landscapes in Phuket , Thailand , the Maldives , the Norwegian cities of Oslo and Lillehammer , Bulgaria , Malta , Sweden and the United States were chosen as locations .

The Oslo Kon-Tiki Museum presented the development of this new Kon-Tiki film in a separate exhibition.

The film was shot in two versions. For the Norwegian market in a Norwegian and for the world market in an English version. It was not synchronized, but the corresponding scenes were shot twice, which means that the two versions in the picture are different. For this reason, the American film distributor The Weinstein Company was not allowed to advertise the film with the Oscar nomination when it released Kon-Tiki in US cinemas in April 2013, as the English version of the film is one according to the regulations of AMPAS another film is about.

Depiction of Watzinger in the film

The film has been criticized for portraying Herman Watzinger . The descendants of Watzinger criticized, among other things, that Herman Watzinger as the second expedition commander in the film does not resemble the real person in appearance, physically and in character. These public reviews sparked a major debate in Norway about the extent and handling of artistic freedom in film , when it is based on real life, like Kon-Tiki . The daughter of Watzinger stated, among other things, that the film reflected a “grossly wrong image” of her father, while others even described the portrayal of Herman Watzinger as character assassination . In the course of these discussions, the filmmakers admitted that they had made an interpretation of Watzinger's person in the film to heighten the tension. But they denied gross falsifications and character assassination for the person of Watzinger.

Cinema performances in Norway

Kon-Tiki drew a large number of visitors to the cinema on the weekend of the premiere, more than before compared to any other Norwegian film on a weekend with a corresponding film release. Over 165,000 people saw the film within the first three days. The previous record was held by the Norwegian film Max Manus from 2008 with 134,842 visitors. After two weeks, the film passed the mark of over 400,000 visitors, making it Norway's second most popular film in 2012. Since the third weekend of the film's release, around 550,000 viewers have seen the film in Norway. After five weeks there were over 700,000 visitors , making Kon-Tiki one of the most watched films of 2012. Because of its success, the film was shown in Norwegian cinemas for six weeks.

Festival performances

Kon-Tiki had its world premiere on August 23, 2012 at Den norske filmfestivalen in Haugesund .

At the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012 the film was presented as part of the program in a “special presentation” and received mostly good reviews.

Reviews

The 2012 film Kon-Tiki received extensive reviews and ratings in the Norwegian press:

International reviews have so far ranged from warm to very good.

Reviews from Germany:

Ulrich Sonnenschein from epd- Film only gives the film 3 out of 5 stars. The criticism says:

"But not only the historical sets are a challenge that the team did not always meet, the film fails mainly because of its own educational claims."
