Espen Sandberg (* 16th June 1971 in Sandefjord , Norway ) is a Norwegian film director and advertising - film producer .

biography

Sandberg, like his future partner Joachim Rønning , grew up in Sandefjord, south of Oslo , and spent his youth there. Together they gained their first experience in the film sector by shooting short films for private use with Rønning's father's video camera. After finishing school, Sandberg and Rønning went to a film school in Stockholm from 1992 to 1994 . After graduating from the Stockholm Film School, they did their military service in the Norwegian Army , where they were mainly engaged in shooting military and commercials for the Norwegian Army. In 1995 they founded the film production company Roenberg together . The name Roenberg is made up of their two surnames "Rønning" and "Sandberg". Her Oslo company mainly produced music videos and commercials, among others for Airbus , Nintendo , Coca-Cola and Nokia . The duo also directed a ski jumping commercial and shot a Budweiser commercial for the US Super Bowl .

Sandberg and Rønning later also made feature films as a directing duo. Sandberg led the Mexican-American western comedy Bandidas together with Joachim Rønning in 2006 . In 2008 they received a lot of attention in Norway for directing the blockbuster film Max Manus . Your movie Max Manus was in 2009 for the Norwegian Amanda - Film Award nomination in the category "Best Director".

In 2012 Sandberg made a film with Rønning about Thor Heyerdahl and his Kon-Tiki expedition , entitled Kon-Tiki . The film had its world premiere on August 23, 2012 at Den norske filmfestivalen in Haugesund . The Oslo Kon-Tiki Museum presented the development of this new Kon-Tiki film in a separate exhibition. Kon-Tiki was nominated in 2013 for the 85th award of the Oscars in the category " Best Foreign Language Film ".

Due to the attention also received in Hollywood, Sandberg and Rønning became director of Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Rache , the fifth part of the internationally successful pirate film series Pirates of the Caribbean, at the end of 2015 . This premiered in May 2017.
