José Luis Bustamante y Rivero (born January 15, 1894 in Arequipa , † January 11, 1989 in Lima ) was a Peruvian politician , lawyer and writer . From 1945 to 1948 he was President of Peru.

Life

José Luis Bustamante y Rivero studied law in Lima . From 1921 to 1934 he was a professor in Arequipa . In addition to other important public offices, he took over the post of Minister of Education in the government of Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro in 1930 . He was also Ambassador to Bolivia and Minister Plenipotentiary in Uruguay .

In 1945, José Luis Bustamante y Rivero won the presidential election as a candidate for the Frente Democrático Nacional (with the support of the left-wing APRA ). He ruled with a loyalty to the law that is rare in Peruvian history, whereupon his government lost support of the APRA in 1947 and came under pressure from the military . In 1948 he was overthrown in a coup by then Minister Manuel A. Odría and sent into exile .

In 1956, after the eight-year reign of Odría ended and Manuel Prado y Ugarteche took over the government, he returned to Peru. From then on, he took over public offices again, such as that of Foreign Minister in 1960. From 1961 to 1970 he was a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague , including from 1967 to 1970 as President of the Court.

José Luis Bustamante y Rivero was distantly related to the writer and later presidential candidate Mario Vargas Llosa .
