Ronny Abraham (born September 5, 1951 in Alexandria ) is a French lawyer. Since February 15, 2005 he has been a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague . He was its President from February 6, 2015 to February 2018.

Life

Abraham obtained a diploma from the Institut d'études politiques de Paris in 1973 and the Diplôme d'études supérieures in public law from the University of Paris I in 1974 . From 1976 to 1978 he studied at the École nationale d'administration .

Until 1998 he was professor of international law at the Institut d'études politiques de Paris and from 1997 to 2003 he was a lecturer at the University of Paris-Nanterre and from 2004 to 2005 he was a lecturer in international law and human rights at the University of Paris II .

Abraham served as an administrative judge from 1978 to 1985 and from 1987 to 1988, and from 1986 to 1987 he was Deputy Director of the Legal Department of the French Foreign Ministry. He then worked as Maître des requêtes in the Conseil d'État until 2000, as well as Conseiller d'État from 2000 and as Commissaire du gouvernement from 1989 to 1998. In the same year he took over the position of director of the legal department in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which he held until 2005.

Abraham has been a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague since February 15, 2005. He thus succeeded his compatriot Gilbert Guillaume , who resigned from his judge's office on February 11, 2005. On November 6, 2008, he was re-elected for a further term beginning on February 6, 2009. Since January 12, 2015 he has also been an ad hoc judge nominated by the Ivory Coast at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg . On February 6, 2015, he was elected President of the International Court of Justice for a three-year term. In 2016 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
