Nagendra Singh (born March 18, 1914 in Dungarpur , †  December 11, 1988 in The Hague ) was an Indian lawyer . He served as a judge at the International Court of Justice from 1973 until his death , including from 1976 to 1979 as Vice-President and from 1985 to 1988 as President of the Court.

Life

Nagendra was born in 1914 as the third son of the Maharajas of Dungarpur . He studied in India at Mayo College in Ajmer and at the Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University in Agra and in England at the University of Cambridge , where he completed his studies with a doctorate . After his training, he completed a career in the civil service in his home country from 1938, including in leading positions in the ministries of defense, transport and information and broadcasting of the Indian government, and in 1972 as head of the Indian electoral commission.

In 1973 he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where he had previously served as an ad hoc judge on one case. From 1976 to 1979 he was Vice President of the ICJ and from 1985 to 1988 President. He was also a co-founder, from 1959 Vice President and from 1974 until his death President of the Indian Society for International Law. His legal interests were diverse and included, for example, maritime law , international environmental law, as well as military disarmament and arms control .

Nagendra Singh was married from 1940. He died in The Hague in 1988 of complications from a heart attack .

Awards

Nagendra Singh belonged to the Institut de Droit international from 1963 and received the Padma Vibhushan in 1973 , the second highest Indian civilian merit . A year later he was made a Fellow at St John's College , Cambridge . From 1985 he was a member of the International Institute for Humanitarian Law in Sanremo . In addition, he received honorary doctorates from various universities and was an honorary member of the American Society for International Law from 1985 . Since 1986 he has been a corresponding member of the British Academy .
