Guy de Lacharrière

Guy Ladreit de Lacharrière (born  June 27, 1919 in Marseille , †  March 10, 1987 in Paris ) was a French lawyer and diplomat . From 1946 to 1982 he worked in the French diplomatic service, including from 1969 to 1979 as director of the legal affairs department at the French Foreign Ministry . From 1982 he was a judge and from 1985 Vice President of the International Court of Justice , where he worked until his death.

Life

Guy Ladreit de Lacharrière was born in Marseille in 1919 and studied law , political science and oriental languages in Paris . In 1946 he began a career in the diplomatic service in his home country. After initially working for the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), where he was Deputy Director of the Department of Social Sciences from 1952 to 1957, he held various positions in the French Foreign Ministry from 1957 to 1979 . From 1964 to 1969 he was Director of the Department for the United Nations and International Organizations and from 1969 to 1979 Director of the Department of Legal Affairs. From 1979 to 1982 he was an extraordinary member of the French Council of State ( Conseiller d'État en service extraordinaire ).

From 1954 to 1981 Guy Ladreit de Lacharrière taught at the Institute for Political Science of the Sorbonne , at the École nationale d'administration and at the Institute for International Relations and at the Law Faculty of the University of Paris II Panthéon-Assas . In addition, he worked as a lecturer at the Hague Academy for International Law . In November 1981 he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague for a regular nine-year term and took office in February 1982. From 1985 he was Vice President of the Court. He died in Paris in 1987, before the end of his term of office as Vice President, which was scheduled to run until 1988.

For his services, Guy Ladreit de Lacharrière was awarded the Order of Officer of the Legion of Honor and that of Commander of the Ordre national du Mérite .
