Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf

Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf ( Somali : Abdulqaawi Ahmed Yuusuf ; born  September 12, 1948 in Eyl ) is a Somali lawyer . From 1981 to 2008 he worked as a senior legal assistant at various subsidiary bodies and specialized agencies of the United Nations . Since February 2009 he has been a judge at the International Court of Justice . In February 2015 he became its vice-president. In February 2018 he was elected President of the ICJ.

Life

Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf was born in Eyl in 1948 and completed his legal training at the National University of Somalia , where he graduated in 1973 with a doctorate in law ( Laurea di Dottore in Giurisprudenza ). He continued his studies in 1974 at the Hague Academy of International Law from 1976 to 1977 to the University of Florence , in 1980 received his doctorate he at the Institute of International Studies of the University of Geneva in the field of international law .

From 1981 he worked in Geneva as a legal assistant at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), where he took on various management positions in the early 1990s. From 1992 to 1994 he was head of the UNCTAD mission in New York . In 1994 he moved to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), where he served as Legal Advisor and Head of the Legal Department until 1998, and then as Deputy Secretary General and Special Advisor for African Affairs until 2001. From 2001 he served as legal advisor and director of the office for international standards and legal affairs at the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO). He was also a representative of his home country and a member of the Somali delegation at various international conferences. At the beginning of November 2008 he was elected by the General Assembly and the Security Council of the United Nations as judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague , where he had previously served as ad hoc judge in a case between Djibouti and France . His regular nine-year term began in February 2009. Since February 2015, he has also held the office of Vice-President of the Court for three years. In February 2018 he was elected President of the ICJ.

Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf is the founder and editor of the African Yearbook of International Law and a member of the editorial board of the Asian Yearbook of International Law . Since 1999 he has been a member of the Institut de Droit international .
