The United Nations Industrial Development Organization , ( English: United Nations Industrial Development Organization ; UNIDO , French / Spanish acronym UNIDO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations with the aim of industrial development in developing countries and transition countries sustainably promote.

The UNIDO was founded on November 17, 1966 as a program of the United Nations and in 1985 transformed into an independent specialized agency of the UN.

The head office is in the UNO-City (Vienna International Center) in Vienna .

The organization has 170 member states (as of April 1, 2019). UNIDO has 47 regional and country offices and employs a total of around 650 people. In addition, more than 1800 international and national experts work on UNIDO projects every year.

UNIDO implemented projects worth a total of 174.7 million US dollars in 2015.

It is currently the only UN organization budgeting in euros , and this change is also under way at the International Atomic Energy Agency .
