Li Yong
Li Yong ( Chinese 李勇 ; born July 1951 in Jining , Shandong ) is a former Deputy Minister of Finance of the People's Republic of China and currently Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
Origin and education
Li Yong was born in 1951 in Jining, east China, to Han Chinese parents. In 1973 he joined the Chinese Communist Party . In the same year he graduated from the Finance Research Institute of the Ministry of Finance of China with a master's degree in economics.
Career
From 1985 to 1988, Li Yong served in the Chinese Legation to the United Nations. In 1989 he became a director of the World Bank Department in the Chinese Ministry of Finance. The following year he worked as a consultant at the World Bank . He then took over the post of Director General in the World Bank Department of the Ministry of Finance, and from 1996 to 1998 he was Executive Director.
In 1999 he became general secretary of the Chinese auditing institute and from 2000 at the same time assistant minister in the Ministry of Finance, and in 2003 he was appointed vice minister. The focus of his work was the containment of inflation by promoting agricultural production. In 2006 he published a forecast for the depreciation of the US dollar by 25%, which led to a discussion about the formation of an Asian currency index (ACU), which should enable a basis for assessing Asian currencies.
In 2013, Li was elected Director General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) to succeed Kandeh Yumkella . In 2017, Li was confirmed in office.
Other fields of activity
Li Yong is a member of the International Gender Champions (IGC) network, which advocates gender equality in international organizations.
