Kandeh K. Yumkella

Kandeh K. Yumkella (born July 5, 1959 in Sierra Leone ) is an agricultural economist and was Director General of UNIDO in Vienna between 2005 and 2013 .

Yumkella attended an agricultural school in Sierra Leone and continued his studies in the United States, which he graduated with a degree in agricultural economics from the University of Illinois with a doctorate in agricultural economics in 1992 . Before joining UNIDO, he was Minister of Commerce of the Republic of Sierra Leone, lectured at American universities and received high recognition and awards for numerous publications. Before being appointed Director General in 2005, he held a number of high-ranking positions at UNIDO and was also a key advisor to his predecessors Mauricio de Maria y Campos and Carlos Alfredo Magariños . In 2009 he was reassigned to his position as General Manager for a further four years. In 2013 he was appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for the UN as special representative for renewable energy at the UN headquarters in New York.

In his speeches, which are always very passionate, he advocates the fight against poverty in the third world and in Africa, and in the interests of reducing climate change , he is a vehement advocate for a rapid switch to renewable energies .

Kandeh K. Yumkella is married with two daughters and lives in New York and Sierra Leone.

Honors

  • 2016: On October 28, 2016, Yumkella received the Hans-Carl-von-Carlowitz Sustainability Award from the Saxon Hans-Carl-von-Carlowitz-Gesellschaft e. V. to promote sustainability.
