Sy Brandon
Sy Brandon (* 1945 in New York City ) is an American composer and music teacher.
Brandon studied music education at Ithaca College and composition at the University of Arizona . His teachers were Warren Benson , Elie Siegmeister and Robert McBride . He was composer in residence at Boise State University from 1973-74 and taught brass instruments, composition, orchestration, music history, and electronic music at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for more than twenty years .
In addition to numerous prizes for his compositions for tuba, euphonium and other brass instruments, Brandon u. a. first prizes at the Kappa Gamma Psi Original Composition Contest (1963), the New England String Ensemble Composition Contest (2000), the Delius Composition Competition (2000) and the Ithaca College Choral Composition Contest (2000). Every year since 1998 he has received the ASCAP Special Award . Brandon's works were a. a. Recorded by the Czech National Philharmonic, the Bulgarian Philharmonic and the Kiev Philharmonic. His brass music can be found in the repertoire of the US Army, Air Force and Navy. His book A Composer's Guide to Understanding Music with Activities for Listeners, Interpreters, and Composers was published by Co-op Press.
