The National University of Somalia ( Somali : Jaamacada Ummada Soomaaliyeed ; English Somali National University ) is the national university of the north- east African country of Somalia . The main campus of the university is in Mogadishu .

Former university building in the early 1990s

The university area is located in the north, about six kilometers from the center of Mogadishu. The building complex was grouped around a main building in 5 concentric quarter rings and surrounded by paths and green spaces. For the first thirty years, the main campus was best known as Jaamacada Gaheyr or Gahery University . From 1954 an Italian-speaking educational institution was established in the Italian trust territory of Somalia , which was connected to the universities of Rome and Padua.

After a coup in 1969, the Somali Democratic Republic was established and the college was nationalized and officially established as the National University of Somalia in December 1969. Since 1973 the facility has been expanded under the military government. The university was able to develop into a center of education over the next twenty years. The university had 13 faculties and half a dozen outposts. Research institutions were also maintained in some cities.

The Lafoole Teacher Training Institute, 20 kilometers west of Mogadishu, was further developed as an independent institution in the mid-1970s with the support of the US Corps. Lafoole taught teaching in English.

The 13 faculties were:

  1. Faculty of Sharia Law
  2. Faculty of Linguistics ( Somali , Arabic , German and English )
  3. Faculty of Livestock and Forestry
  4. Faculty of Teaching (Institute for Teaching Lafoole)
  5. Faculty of Agriculture
  6. Faculty of Geology and Mining
  7. Faculty of Medicine (Institute of Medicine, near Digfeer Hospital )
  8. Faculty of Chemistry and Engineering
  9. Faculty of History
  10. Faculty of Geography
  11. Faculty of Science
  12. Faculty of Mathematics
  13. Faculty of Health Care

In the 1980s the university had over 3,000 students and over 600 employees. The Somali civil war that began in the late 1980s caused extensive damage to university facilities. In addition, the civil war made it increasingly difficult to obtain teaching materials and to keep teaching going, so that the university had to cease operations since the beginning of the conflict.

In autumn 2014, the university reopened after 23 years and 375 students began studying. The reconstruction and the equipment were financed by the government of Bahrain .
