Robert Yewdall Jennings

Sir Robert Yewdall Jennings (born  October 19, 1913 in Yorkshire , †  August 4, 2004 in Cambridge ) was a British lawyer . He was Whewell Professor of International Law at the University of Cambridge from 1955 to 1982 and served as a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague from 1982 to 1995 , including as President of the Court from 1991 to 1994.

Life

Robert Jennings was in 1913 in Yorkshire born and studied history and later law at Downing College of the University of Cambridge , where he statements as a Master of Arts (M.A.) and Bachelor of Laws (LL. B.) acquired. He then continued his education in 1937/1938 with a scholarship at Harvard University . From 1938 until the beginning of the Second World War , he taught as an assistant lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science before working in the intelligence field during the war .

After the end of the war he worked as a lecturer at the University of Cambridge, where he was appointed to the prestigious Whewell Chair in International Law in 1955 at the age of 42 . He held this position until the beginning of 1982, in 1967 he also worked as a lecturer at the Hague Academy for International Law . In February 1982 he became a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), where he also served as an ad hoc judge in one case. He succeeded his compatriot Humphrey Waldock , who had died in office , at court . In addition, he was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration from 1982 . From 1991 to 1994 he was President of the ICJ. During this time he placed particular emphasis on the unity and cohesion of the court and accordingly acted as a mediator. He also managed to improve the representation of the court in the media in his home country.

Robert Jennings died in Cambridge in 2004 .

Awards

Robert Jennings was from 1939 a Fellow of Jesus College in Cambridge, where he was temporarily president. In 1982 he was promoted to Knight Bachelor , in 1983/1984 he was president and from 1985 honorary member of the Institut de Droit international , of which he was an associate from 1957 and a member from 1967. He has received honorary doctorates from the universities of Oxford , Cambridge , Hull , Leicester and Saarland , and a chair in international law is named after him at the University of Leicester. The American Society for International Law made him an honorary member in 1988 and awarded him the Manley O. Hudson Medal in 1993 for outstanding services in the field of international law.
