Manley O. Hudson Medal

The Manley O. Hudson Medal is an award given by the American Society for International Law (ASIL) in memory of the life's work of its namesake Manley Ottmer Hudson , with which “outstanding contributions, comparable to those of Judge Hudson himself, and proven to be recognized by excellent academic achievements and achievements in the field of international law and in promoting the establishment and maintenance of international relationships on the basis of law and justice “of an American or foreign personality.

It was awarded for the first time in 1956 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of ASIL and is considered the society's highest honor. The medal was donated as part of a donation of securities worth US $ 5,350 to the company by Manhattan- based attorney Ralph G. Albrecht , who was a member of the American prosecution at the Nuremberg trial of the major war criminals after the end of World War II . The award took place at first without a fixed cycle and often at intervals of several years, since 1995 one recipient has been awarded annually.

Of the 38 people awarded the Manley O. Hudson Medal (as of 2018), ten served as judges at the International Court of Justice in The Hague , five of them as President of the Court. Thirteen recipients of the medal served as President of ASIL. Around a third of the winners come from abroad, including four each from Great Britain and France and one each from Egypt , Australia , Belgium , Germany , Israel , Switzerland and Uruguay . The medal has been awarded to women four times so far.
