Prosper Weil

Prosper Weil (born  September 21, 1926 in Strasbourg ; † October 3, 2018 in Paris ) was a French lawyer and expert in the field of international administrative law . He worked as a professor at various universities, from 1965 at the University of Paris , and from 1980 to 1999 he was a member of the Administrative Court of the World Bank . He has also represented a number of countries before the International Court of Justice . For his services he was accepted into the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1999 and in 2001 was awarded the Manley O. Hudson Medal of the American Society for International Law .

Life

Prosper Weil was born in Strasbourg in 1926 and completed his education at the Universities of Aix-en-Provence and Paris . In 1952 he received his doctorate from the law faculty in Paris as well as the Agrégation . He then worked as a professor at the Universities of Grenoble , Aix-en-Provence and Nice and from 1965 at the University of Paris and, after its division in the course of the university reform of 1970/1971, at the University of Paris II . In 1969, 1976 and 1992 he taught at the Hague Academy of International Law .

He was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and was a member of the Administrative Tribunal of the World Bank from 1980 to 1999 , including as President of the Court from 1990 to 1993. In addition, he worked in various arbitration tribunals for the settlement of international disputes and as an advisor or representative of France, Cameroon , Spain , Greece , Canada , Malta , El Salvador , Norway and Bahrain in proceedings before the International Court of Justice in The Hague .

Awards

Prosper Weil had been a member of the Institut de Droit international since 1981 and was also admitted to the Académie des sciences morales et politiques in 1999 and to the Academy of Athens as a foreign member in 2008. The American Society for International Law awarded him their highest honor in 2001 with the Manley O. Hudson Medal .
