Richard B. Pictures

Richard Bruce Bilder (born  November 3, 1927 in South Orange , New Jersey ) is an American lawyer who is particularly active in the field of international law . From 1965 to 1998 he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and received the Manley O. Hudson Medal of the American Society for International Law in 2016 in recognition of his work .

Life

Richard B. Bilder was born in South Orange, New Jersey, in 1927 and received a BA in Political Economy from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1949 . He then studied in the years 1949/1950 with a Fulbright scholarship at Pembroke College of the University of Cambridge and 1950/1951 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , respectively economics . After graduating from Harvard University in 1956 as a Juris Doctor , he was admitted to the bar in New Jersey and the District of Columbia in 1956 , the United States Supreme Court in 1960 , Wisconsin in 1965, and the Court of 1968 Military Appeals . In 1945/1946 and from 1951 to 1953 he did military service in the United States Navy .

From 1956 to 1965 he worked as a lawyer in the United States Department of State and in this context was a member or legal advisor of the delegations in his home country at various international meetings and negotiations. From 1965 he was initially assistant professor or associate professor at the law faculty of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he served from 1967 to 1998 as a full professor. Since his retirement he has continued to work at the university as Foley & Lardner-Bascom Emeritus Professor of Law and Affiliate Professor of Environmental Studies . He also worked as a visiting professor at various universities. In 1975 he taught at the Hague Academy of International Law .

Richard B. Bilder is married and has four children.

Act

Richard B. Bilder focuses on teaching and research on international law and the law of international organizations . This applies in particular to the settlement of international disputes, international law of the sea , international environmental law and the law of international relations . From 1981 to 1983 he was Vice President of the American Society for International Law, and since 1972 he has been co-editor of the American Journal of International Law .

Awards

Richard B. Bilder received an honorable mention from the American Society for International Law in 1982 for the publication of his book "Managing the Risks of International Agreement" and in 2016 with the Manley O. Hudson Medal, its highest award. From 1994 to 1999 he was Honorary Vice President of the company. A scholarship for international law students bears his name in his honor at the law school of the University of Wisconsin .
