John H. Jackson

John Howard Jackson (born  April 6, 1932 in Kansas City , †  November 7, 2015 in Ann Arbor ) was an American lawyer . He worked from 1961 to 1966 as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley and from 1966 to 1997 at the University of Michigan , and was from 1998 professor at Georgetown University .

The focus of his work was international business law and international business relations . Among other things, he received honorary doctorates from the University of Hamburg and the European University Institute, as well as the Manley O. Hudson Medal from the American Society for International Law .

Life

John Howard Jackson was 1932 in Kansas City born and gained 1954 an AB degree at Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs of Princeton University and in 1959 a Juris Doctor at the University of Michigan . He also became a professor here in 1966, after having worked as a lawyer in the law firm Foley, Sammond and Lardner in Milwaukee from 1959 to 1961 and as a professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 1961 to 1966 .

At the University of Michigan, where he also served as President for Academic Affairs in 1988/1989, he taught international law , private international law , American foreign relations law and international business law , among others . After his retirement from the University of Michigan at the end of 1997, he moved to Georgetown University , where he was professor and director of the Institute for International Business Law from 1998 onwards.

In addition to his university engagements, John Howard Jackson worked as a consultant to the Ford Foundation and as a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of International Law . In 1998 he was chief editor of the publishing house Oxford University Press appearing Journal of International Economic Law . He died in Ann Arbor in 2015 .

Act

John Howard Jackson dedicated himself in particular to international commercial law and international economic relations , in particular the World Trade Organization (WTO), the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the International Monetary Fund . He has published several books on the legal principles, the workings and the effects of the WTO and GATT, and was considered one of the leading American experts in this area today.

Awards

In recognition of his work, John Howard Jackson received the Wolfgang Friedmann Memorial Award from the Law Faculty of Columbia University in 1992 and the Manley O. Hudson Medal, the highest award of the American Society for International Law , which he also received appointed honorary vice-president. The University of Hamburg (2003) and the European University Institute (2008) awarded him an honorary doctorate . In 2002 he gave the Hersch Lauterpacht Memorial Lecture at the University of Cambridge . A commemorative publication in honor of John Howard Jackson was published in 2000 under the title “New Directions in International Economic Law” .
