Paul Guggenheim (born September 15, 1899 in Zurich , † August 31, 1977 in Geneva ) was a Swiss international lawyer .

Guggenheim's father was also a lawyer; he himself studied law at the universities of Zurich , Geneva , Rome and Berlin . He received his doctorate in 1924 and was briefly head of the international law department at the University of Kiel in 1927 , before completing his habilitation the following year. Between 1932 and 1958 he taught in The Hague . From 1952 he was a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague. After being nominated by Liechtenstein , he acted as an ad hoc judge in one case at the International Court of Justice . From 1955 to 1965 he was a full professor at the Institut universitaire des hautes études in Geneva.

The American Society for International Law made Paul Guggenheim an honorary member in 1963 and awarded him its highest honor in 1970 with the Manley O. Hudson Medal . In 1964 he received an honorary doctorate from the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel .

In 1979 a foundation was established in his memory, which since 1980 has awarded a biannual prize worth CHF 15,000 to young researchers in the field of international law. In 2017 the prize was shared by Marina Aksenova and Vladyslav Lanovoy.
