The University Institute for International Studies and Development ( French Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement (IHEID) , English Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies ) is a university with the legal status of a private foundation . The IHEID is the successor to the Institut universitaire de hautes études internationales (IUHEI) founded in 1927 and the Institut universitaire d'études du développement (IUED) in Geneva, which was affiliated in 2008 .

The Institute

The IHEID is considered to be the oldest institution for international studies in continental Europe . Its founders, the French- speaking diplomat William Rappard and the French economic historian Paul Mantoux, tried to institutionalize the vigor of the League of Nations , which had been based in Geneva since 1920, and laid the foundations for later research and teaching opportunities. The emergence of National Socialism in Germany drove outstanding researchers from Germany, some of whom were accepted in Geneva. These included, for example, liberal economists such as Wilhelm Röpke and Ludwig von Mises . In addition to these two, Guglielmo Ferrero , Hans Kelsen , Hans Wehberg and Walther Schücking also strengthened the school's teaching staff.

In 1945 Jacques Fremond took over the management of the school and led it for 23 years, during which he built an Africa institute, from which the current branch of development aid developed. This fact also means that there is hardly an institute that is more internationalized than IHEID.

Now time

800 students from more than 100 countries attend the renowned institute, which is now spread over several buildings in Geneva. The new main campus has been the Maison de la paix ("House of Peace") since autumn 2013 , which was built on a plot of land in the Geneva quarter of the international organizations. The state government made federal funds available for the construction.

In addition to a large part of the IHEID, the “House of Peace” also houses the three Geneva centers that are subordinate to the Federal Department of Home Affairs and the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport : the Geneva Center for Security Policy , the Center for Democratic Control the armed forces and the International Center for Humanitarian Demining .
