Elihu Lauterpacht

Sir Elihu Lauterpacht CBE (born July 13, 1928 in Cricklewood , London ; † February 8, 2017 ) is the son of the international lawyer Hersch Lauterpacht and was himself a judge in the field of international law. Lauterpacht was from 1953 Fellow at Trinity College in Cambridge, where he taught international law.

Life

Elihu Lauterpacht was legal advisor to the Australian Foreign Office from 1975 to 1977 and in this capacity deputy head of the Australian delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations . Furthermore, from 1993 to 2001 he was ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the case of Bosnia versus Yugoslavia and chairman of the Eritrea / Ethiopia border commission. He was also a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA). He has served as legal advisor in several proceedings before the International Court of Justice.

Elihu Lauterpacht was inducted into the Order of the British Empire as Commander in 1989 and made a Knight Bachelor in 1998 . The American Society for International Law (ASIL) awarded him and posthumously his father an ASIL Certificate of Merit in 1972 for their joint work as the editor of the International Law Reports . In addition, the ASIL made him an honorary member in 1993 and in 2005 awarded him the Manley O. Hudson Medal for services in the field of international law, their highest honor. For 2013 he was awarded the The Hague Prize for International Law .
